P4 3ghz (C) or AMD 3200+ 64 ??

I am going to build up a basic solid server. I know nothing about running them so I figure build a nice one and jump in head first. I just placed my order for the 3200+ AMD64. Look under my rigs to see my P4 setup.

Basically I am wondering what you all think I should use as my primary game system and which I should dedicate to the server. Not exactly sure of all the servers purpose yet , do know I want a CS and COD to be able to host games.

My p4 runs stable now for the last 6months at 3.45ghz @ 920fsb. Should I just leave my P4 alone as my main system so I won't have to reinstall it with software and just use the new 64 and build it into a game server?

Thanks.

Yeah I plan on throwing in 2gbs. I love overclocking but the server will only be clocked within its 100% stable range, so since there is no AGP/PCI lock on the board, I will hardly raise it. Whats the speed of memory I should use? PC2700 or PC3200?

the a64 is better for games, the p4 is slightly better for a server because of the ht. over all jump for the a64.

pc3500+ if your getting eather and overclocking

I don't think you guys are reading my post correctly. I OWN BOTH now. I already have the P4 system, I just ordered the AMD64 and wondering which I should use as the main game system and which I should use as the server. 🙂

Another vote. P4 with HT for server, and Athlon64 for Gaming. Make sure the Athlon64 has 1 gig ram, and at least an X800 Radeon video to play all the latest games.

I have already dropped a good ammount of time and money into the cooling of the P4 system. I was hoping to just get away with running stock cooling and cheaper memory since I wasn't going to OC the 64 like I do the P4. Is the speed advantage that much faster for games with the 64?

JUst do a mild OC on the 64 as is, and run it. You can allways change your mind. The P4 is a fine server, and the Athlon64 is smoother in games overall, so just try it !
