I picked up an FX55 (I think it's a san diego, the number ends in BN) for $160

I was thinking of upgrading from my p4 3.4ghz, but then I realized I'd need to get a board too (I found a BFGRNF4U for $45). That board means I'd need to get new(old?) DDR memory, I use 2gb of DDR2 now.

So basically it's going to cost me around $300 or so to "upgrade" to the FX55....will I see a noticable difference?I'm not into overclocking, although from what I've read it's somewhat easy to OC a little bit using stock everything.

EDIT: didnt' think about ebaying old board, memory and chip, which means I would probably actually come out making money....

so is it worth the time, I guess? would I really notice the difference in gaming and such?

should I just hock that fx55 instead and invest in a better video card? My x850xt is getting middle aged.

EDIT: decided to sell the FX55

for gaming a vidoe card upgrade would do nicely. for 300 you can get a 7900gt.but the aghain the x850xt is still quite fast.

damn! thats a nice price for an FX55...

i think you will see a good difference (at least in gaming) between your old p4 3.4...maybe not in multitasking but otherwise yes.

get a 7900GT and OC the FX55 since its unlocked both upwards and downwards...

OMG what a good price! :Q

In most games, the FX-55 will be significantly better.

But heh, i'd likely sell the FX-55...make some money off it & then buy an Opteron 165 & OC to FX-60 speed :D

Meh, I would suggest you sell the Athlon FX 55, going from a Pentium 4 3.4GHZ your going to lose HyperThreading technology along the way, so multitasking will be less smooth on the FX 55.

Just sell the FX 55 now, and wait for Conroe ready motherboards to come out, buy one of those, migrate your Pentium 4 to it with your already available DDR2, memory and then later on get Conroe and just drop in upgrade.
