what card should i buy with $250?

my 64mb 4200 is crapping out.

Should I get a 9800 something, a 5900 something or wait for 6800 to get to 250 ranges?

thanks

If you wait some more for 6800GT to fall in price your cpu will become less efficient with time passing by.
I would suggest a 9800pro and some ram if you have any money left.

I'd go with a 128mb, 256bit 9800pro for ~$180-$200. Ram would be nice too, but if you say your current card is dying... Can get the ram too if you manage to get a good deal on the card and scrape up a few extra bucks.

forgot to mention i have ramass, i mean rambus memory so i have to buy in pairs which aint cheap.

currently have 2-256mb and 2 64mb sticks. pc-800

640 mb ram is fine. I didn't notice any performance difference going from 512 to 1024 in games like ut2k4 and farcry, which everyone said needed 1 gig.

It likely depends on the system and I'm not saying you're wrong, but I can attest firsthand in my system upgrading from 512mb -> 1gb made a big difference in 3d games. However, with Rambus memory I'd probably stick with what you have, the upgrade isn't worth the higher cost IMO. The 9800pro should kick some serious ass 😀

Iirc the plain 6800s are on average ~30% faster than a 128/256 9800pro. Up to you if that performance increase is worth the higher pricetag.

I just upgraded my system a few weeks ago from an Athlon XP 2500+ OC'd to 3200+ to an Athlon 64 3200+ Newcastle and from a GF4 Ti4200 128MB to a 9800 Pro 128MB. WOW, what a big diff. 9800 Pro is definitely best bang for the buck, and I agree that you shouldn't wait for the next-gens to come down in price. By then you'll need a total upgrade.

If you can hit bestbuy today, you can have it for $229 - 10% - $50 rebate = $157 + tax on $229.

I would say around $175-$180

I would try to wait for the GT's to come down or even the X800Pro's. However if you absolutely cant wait i would get the NU as it is still better than the 9800Pro. But if ya want to save money than the 9800Pro is an awesome card (look at the 5900XT's also they are just a tad slower in some areas.

Yeah, but by how much roughly? ie. the 6800 nu is about a 30% increase over the 9800. And are there any hardware reasons why it's better? ie. more pipelines? better ram? etc. I'm not ruling out the x800 either; I favor neither company over the other... but the 6800gt does look appealing to me.

The GT is around double the 9800 Pro for double the cost. Similar price/performance ratios, though the 9800 does have a slight edge in that due to AF usage. Of course, the 9800 is lacking in performance as well.

3dmarkwise, you're looking at 6500 for an overclocked 9800 and 12000 for an overclocked GT, which I think shows the cards' relative performance well.

The GT is 16 pipelines, 350/1000, 256 mb ram
The nu is 12 pipelines, 325/700, 128 mb ram

i would either go with the fx 5900xt or the 9800 pro, if you don't wanna sit around and wait for prices to drop
you got plenty of memory and your cpu is fast enough to where it would be a waste of money to upgrade, unless maybe you feel you can sell your old cpu for atleast half the price of an upgrade 🙂

If its between a 5900XT and a 9800 Pro, DEFINITELY go for the 9800 Pro. The 5900XT is a good nVidia card for the money, but it pales in comparison to the 9800P (ESP with AA/AF usage). And at least in stores, they're only like $30 apart.
