p4 2.4 should i o/c?

Hey all, gettinga p4 2.4 533fsb, I have never oced before and was wondering if i should oc this and if so what is a safe oc? i need this cpu to last me 2-3 years before another upgrade

Well... my point of view is that it is kinda a waste of money if you don't. I always used the FS/FT threads when it is time for me to upgrade. So I never had a CPU that lasted 2-3 years. Average lifetime before I upgrade is about 4-10 months.

I would say oc it even if just a little. I just got my 2.4 533 and have it running 150fsb or 2.7ghz rock solid. I increased the voltage to 1.6 and could probably mess around trying to lower it but all I know is that now its like a rock running Prime 95 and 3dmark looping all night with no problems. I have the retail one and I am just using the stock hsf.

But seriously, if you have the RAM and mobo to do it, 150 FSB and 2.7Ghz is performance for free.

It really depends on what your using your computer for?? 2.4ghz is by no means slow so make sure you really need a 300mhz boost which you wont really notice much IMHO. OC'ing can and will decrease the life of your CPU but it should last well over your 2-3yr timeframe you stated. Good Luck and OC'ing! :D

yep mine runs @2.7 150 fsb on stock retail cooling/voltage on a P4PE, go for it :)

i have the same processor with retail hsf. what voltage and fsb should i try to jump up to? also what does the voltage effect?

1.)Move up 3-5mhz at a time using default vcore.
2.)Run a couple of benchmark tests with each increase. (ie: 3dMark, Sandra, etc)
3.)If you experience any problems during bench test (reboots, no complete, etc), increase the vcore by about 5%. This should give you added stability for that speed.
4.)After you have what you consider the maximum for the cpu, run Prime95 torture test for at least 3-5 hours. You complete that program and you can consider the system stable.

You should realize that there are other hdwe components that will effect the system overclock and stability, also.
I would strongly suggest that you do not increase the vcore above 1.70v or the memory above 1.80v and that if you have an agp/pci lock on your board that you set it to 66/33.
