I recently replaced a p4 2.0 Ghz (400MHZ bus) with a 2.4 (533Mhz). On start up the computer seemed quite a bit slower and system information was unable to ID the CPU. I ran Sandra and it stated that the CPU was running at 1.2 Ghz and not 2.4. The computer this is in is a Dell 8100 running winXP pro with 512 of pc800 RDRAM. The CPU is placed in a Powerleap upgrade http://www.powerleap.com/Products/P4N.htm in order to use the socket 478 (please note that the 2.0 was also in this powerleap) Any help on why it is running so slowly or what I could do to fix this would be nice. Thank you.

And thats why.

If you need another 400mhz p4 I have a 1.7 that would work fine in that mobo. I would trade you for your p4 and pay you the differance.

People need to remember most dell systems are dead ends.....Not worth upgrading them sell them as a unit and build yourself something better....

MObos tend to have specific bios for them with no tweaking options...
power supplies are often proprietary and wont work on other boards...

Just disasters when it comes to upgrading anything much other then adding a stick of ram...

Hmm, I was under the impression that a 533Mhz CPU would function but just be at 400. That would explain some loss but not dropping down to 1.2Ghz?? And in terms of a trade, I have a 2.0 so do not need a 1.7 but thanks for the offer. I guess if this one will not work I will give it back to my buddy. Also while I know that Dells are not great for upgrades it is what I have currently and since I do not really want to spend the cash to have a new system, this seemed like a nice option.

edit ok, friend stated that the CPU he gave me is not 533Mhz but an 800Mhz fsb. he thought I had a motherboard that it would work on. Guess that explains the drop to 1.2. Thanks again all.
