P4 1.8 Ghz Northwood VS Athlon XP Palomino 1900+

While there about the same price......what one would u go for? Saying that the Northwood is capable of a 33-50%+ avg overclock, is it still possible to consider the 1900 chip?

If you kept the cpu's at the default clock the the XP would be the better performer. If you want to OC then the P4 would have more headroom. Depends on what you want to do.

what fan (or device?) would u reccomend for a 33% overclock? model/ manufacturer..

sorry im annoying, im a noob (oh my)...

I've just finished test both a 1.6 Norwood @ 2.4GHz and a +1500 Athlon OC'ed to 1600MHz (actual). I used a +1500 because of the 10.0 multiplier allows a 160MHz FBS which gives more mem bandwidth. The P4 stomped the Athlon in everything except rendering where the Athlon rendered a scene one second faster (a fairly large difference as it takes around 100 MHz to drop a second. Actually with the P4 at 800 over it should be stomping the hell out of everything but the long pipelines that allow the faster speed which paradoxly slow the chip down.
Of course you are not guaranteed 2.4GHz from a Northwood but are guaranteed excellent performance from the Athlon. The Northwood 1.6 running 1.6 is a complete dog so you better hope it will OC.

Why wouldnt it? It comes with a built in fan. I have a Volcano 478, Arctic Silver 3, and an Abit SD7-533...i dont see why it wouldnt go to at least 2.4 or more

Hey I am a big athlon amd supporter, but this should be a no-brainer but I see too many ppl are following partisan lines...

I have my 1.8@2.4ghz @ 1.57v (can do more) all on a quite retail hsf and one of my big case fans gone...I haven't heard silence like this in ages...I will couple this with kingmax pc2700ddr on sis chipset and I know that I have a system that would take a great oc on a 2000+ board to beat it in majority of apps....

PLus remember I bought the chip for 208 and came with fan that is sufficient to run a 33% oc...an athlon 2000+ will cost me 245 plus I will need an aftermarket fan if I want to get anything out of the chip ocing wise....add about 40 there

Bang for the buck is no contest....

I will always own athlons though...work system is still an athlon as there is nothing better in cadd apps...ofcourse If amd is slow on ramping up that may not always be true..

Big reason I went for the p4 was the fact that the thoroughbred in my eyes was a lackluster upgrade...at least p4 northwood added 512kb cache and .13 micron chip

i've got my 1.6a as high as 2.3 but i run it at 1.6 and it feels faster than my 1700+.

no benchmarks, just seat of pants thing. the intel feels better to me. i would buy intel right now cause i feel they are cost competitive.
