p4 1.6a with asus p4s333 startup issue

Hello everyone, I just built my first machine yesterday. Based on a lot of people's recommendations on this board I went the 1.6a northwood route with asus p4s333 mb.

I have the machine running well for the most part but have one issue that seems strange. Every now and then when I startup the machine, it stalls and just hangs. So I shut if off and turn it back on and the bios comes up saying that the CPU is not clocked properly ( I haven't tried overclocking yet btw ). So I check out the settings in the bios and everything looks fine, exit, and then it starts up just fine, no issues. As anyone else seen this and/or know how to get this to stop?

Welcome to the AT forums It's helpful if you list full system specs including PSU wattage, brand, and combined output. Could be bad battery, poor or faulty PSU, just need a bios flash ect... I have that combo and I haven't seen this issue, however I believe it's trying to tell you that it needs to go faster!!!!! J/K but honestly, I run mine@2.133ghz@default voltage and others go higher yet@default and ludicrous speeds with vcore increase. Try running it 133/133 w/1.1 ratio and see if the problem pesists, if it does then the system specs are indespensible to ATers trying to assist you

I suspect there is something wrong in ur jumper positions maybe? Is it currently in the jumperfree mode?

Yes, its currently in jumperfree mode

there is a jumper on the board (upper left corner) that does the "pin trick" for you.
that jumper will make your default voltage 1.6-1.61v and it will boot/reboot w/o problems.
that jumper works in both jumper and jumperfree modes.

dont forget to add that 0.1v to your final cpu voltage - as the bios cpu voltage options wont reflect the change.
bios setting 1.5v will now be 1.6v etc.

Thugsrock, I tried setting the pin for the extra voltage. According to the P4S333 documentation it adds another .2 volts. When I did that the cpu voltage actually shot up to 1.8, because the hardware monitor kicked in to warn me about the voltage.

So I reset the jumper back, and now switched to motherboard jumper mode. I'll see how that goes. Thanks everyone for your help so far.

BTW Dapunisher, i'm using an enhance 300 watt ATX power supply.

um, you dont have to use jumper mode...

set that voltage jumper again and lower your voltage in bios.
you minimum voltage will now be 1.6v even tho your lowest option is 1.5v in bios. (1.5v now = 1.6v)
also, disable halt on error in your bios

the new 1.6v minimum voltage will help boot at alot higher overclock.
just dont get confused in the bios over the voltage cause the listed numbers are wrong

that jumper on your mother IS "the pin trick" so many ppl talk about - we just have a jumper for it.

When I had done the "pin trick" I had set the voltage to 1.5, 1.6, and 1.7 and had the "too much" power to the CPU error go off when after it had run for a little while on all 3 settings. So I switched it back and then switched to jumper mode and haven't had the boot-up problem since. I'll probably have to revisit this issue when I get ready to overclock, but I'm in no hurry to do that quite yet. Thanks for your suggestions!

OMFG I feel four I had two different asus boards p3v4x and cusl2 and they both had the same problem you are having..does the bios say improper cpu frequesncy etc. ?
I never found the problem just got rid of the crap..i will never buy asus again...

Hmmm...the voltage pins worked for me....I set it and left voltage at 1.5 in bios and asusprobe and bios told me I was running 1.6v...I bumped it up to 1.55v in bios to get my 2.4ghz oc and the asusprobe says 1.65v....

Call asus tech support...Maybe you can rma it for a new one....It is still the best board maker around IMO...

Hey FoosHammer, I'm glad to hear that the jumper mode seems to have resolved your problem and since it's a known fix for certain instabilties which appear in "jumper free mode" with some of the socket A boards from Asus, I say well done! However, it should not have been necessary and if your the least bit unhappy with having to implement a fix to make the system run properly I would suggest you take Duvie's advice and exchange it.
