P4 1.6a w/ Retail heatsink - Is 50C too high??

I'm running a P4 1.6a (not OC'd) on the intel retail heatsink and my ambient temps (according to the gigabyte windows utility and BIOS) runs btw 47-50C

Since it's a flexATX case, there's only the heatsink and the PSU fan blowing inside. I'm not even sure how hot it gets while I game, perhaps around 53-55C even.

Should I give that retail heatsink some time for the wax on there to settle in before I jump to conclusions? Or should just hurry and take it off and put some AS2 on it now?

so i'm guessing the 1.6a shouldn't be running at that high of temps? It's been running for about 12 hours now, so I think the wax probably has settled in already....

That is a very high temp for a 1.6a at default. There's no real danger at this point, but cleaning it up and applying some AS3 would help a lot...

The heatsink and fan should be fine if ur not overclocking. Just get it the hell off, clean off the crap intel use and carfully apply some ASIII. If u take ur time u should see some pretty major improvents immediatly - just dont forget to remove the intel gunk AND the intel foil pad!

what's the foil pad? All I saw on the heatsink was this thin layer of brown goo...

will AS2 work ok instead of AS3?

What mobo are you running???

The temps are ok...as long as you are not in the 60's you should be fine...

If you have any aspirations of ocing any this could be a limiting factor....

I had a 1.8a on a MSI ARU mobo that said I was idle at 48c and load at 60c with retail hsf with thermal pad....I took that same processor and put it on an asus p4s333 mobo w/ as2 and the idle was 38c with load at 52c....Got a new hsf w/ as2 and ran it oc'd at 2.4ghz (1.65v) and I was idle 39c and load 51c...

So boards vary on temps....lack of adequate case cooling could be effecting you as well....

I bet as2 alone will only effect idle temps 1-2c and maybe 4c at load....If case temp is too high it wont help much. Better case cooling and as2 would be a good idea...

It's a gigabyte 8ILFL board inside this case

gigabyte pc

Space inside is VERY cramped and the only fan in the case is on the psu, blowing downward directly on the heatsink.

After 15 hours, the temps have gone down to 45-46C according the gigabyte hardware manager, and I think it still hits up to 51C under load. I guess I was being lazy, but I should've put AS2 on there to begin with.

Load it with prime95 or 3dmark loops...that swing of 6c from idle to load is way too small for a retail hsf regardless if ran at default...Likely it still loads at 54-55c in prime95....

Those temps are fine if not going to oc...I would want those in the 40's if I plan on raising vcore and clock speed a lot!!!

I don't think the temps are that bad, considering how small of case that is. Plus, you have only one fan, the PSU fan, which doesn't do much for cooling, considering it is an exhaust fan.

I'd be happy with the temps. I wouldn't be worried. However, AS3 would probably lower your temps a bit.

Nice case, by the way! :)

Hi!

I've obviously been following this thread and have a question about motherboards and the temperature being reported by the thermistor built into the P4. It would appear that different motherboards will yield different temperatures. Is this caused by the motherboard running chips cooler or hotter? Or perhaps, is it the motherboard just reading the temperature differently?

By the way, I have a P4 1.6a overclocked to 2.2 GHz running on an Asus P4T533-C motherboard. The temperatures that I get are 39c at idle and 51c on full load while running 3dMark on loop. I am using ASUS Probe to track the temperatures for me.

It just appears some are calibrated differently....Oddly enough the asus mobos tend to overvolt yet still get better idle and load temps at default speeds....

There are some threads floating around talking about the different mobos and what ppl are seeing for reported temps...Asus mobos are lower then about everybody...epox is in the middle...MSI and Abit having some of the higher temps reported even when case and room temps are better then ppl's on asus mobos....

Just don't put too much stock in the temps being reported, period....I think below 60c is fine for anybody in load situation...

I get 52C max on my pentium 4 1.6 and 43 on idle. I say it is fine the limit I read in the Intel manual is 70C!!!
