P4 1.6A i845 vs. 1.8A SiS645

i had originally run this shootout with only the SiS645 motherboard. but due to that fact the SiS645 moboard would NOT run beyond 146fsb, i had to get another motherboard (i845) to complete the 1.6A tests. some comments in the thread may no longer relate to this update.

the i845 can perform just as fast with only 300DDR? :Q

its about time somebody asked that! 😉

no it wont - not even 147fsb 🙁
tried everything - nothing helps it.

its solid as a rock @ 146fsb tho 🙂

Does anyone mind explaining these numbers a little?
I've been running my celeron 450a for years now I am looking for
upgrade.
But what used to be simple multiplier x FSB = CPU clock is changed into something
what I really dont understand... I've searched for a while but still not quite sure...

For example...
------------------------
16x146 2336mhz 4:5 375ddr > > > 1.600v

I think...
16 = multiplier
146 = FSB?
2336 = CPU clock
there's also a quad-dump clock that I'm not sure what it is..

4:5 is the async ratio of system vs memory
375 = (146/4)*5 and *2 (since it's DDR?) but shouldn't that be 365??

got my 1.6a to 2443mhz ( i think, was around there ) at 16X153 1.65 volts, but was getting errors when just loading windows (data corruption, so i bumped it back down to 2.3 something and was looking good at 1.625 volts, but I didn't really want to leave it there so I put it back down to the comfortabe place of 2.13 at default voltage (1.5)

Thanks THUGSROOK for your informative post.

Have you tried flashing your bios to make it the P4S533? That's what mine is now.

He has his flashed just as do I!

JTKGY - sorry for that typo - you are correct its 365ddr 😱

yes i am using the P4S533 bios on my P4S333. (actually i tried them both trying to pass 146fsb)

adding more voltage did nothing for the 1.6a. it just doesnt want to go any higher.

no way! no water cooling here!

im using a Thermaltake P4V HSF with AS2.
3 exaust fans in my case - nothing exotic.

max temps are below 47C on the 1.8a and 42C on the 1.6a.

I have a AVC Sunflower HSF and AS2

One case exhaust fan right above my CPU and one exhaust fan below my video card.

Plus a 120MM fan blowing air around inside of my case.

Max temps on my Northwood OC is 48 C

that sounds about right.
P4As run cool but put off a ton of heat!
many exaust fans needed.
an exaust fan behind the cpu is a must, and a blowhole in the top of the case would be a nice addition.

my previous CPU was a P4 Willy 1.5 @ 2.0.
talk about heat!!!!

Do u mean your Willie overheated much in stock performance or o/ced? Actual temps? How did u get to 2Ghz? Any info would be greatly appreciated in my Willie's case (check rig if u like). Thanx in advance!

i had the P4 1.5 on pretty much the same system im running now. (rigs link)

i had it running @ 1.9ghz on default voltage but ran into the usual dead cold boot problems when going any higher. then i figured out that my moboard has a default voltage booster (same as a pin trick) and i was able to boot @ upto 2.0ghz.
at 1.5 it wasnt too hot but once i hit 1.92ghz it starting banging up against the "thermal throttle wall" very quickly making the overclock useless. it took alot of work (case fans/cpu HSFs/fan placement experiments) to keep it under 52C and not throttle.

it was a fun little chip. i learned alot from it 🙂

<< This guy here evidently has his 1.6@2.5 Damn is that even possible? A 900Mhz OC? >>

Yep, very possible😀 I've seen atleast one member here running a 1.6A @2.58!(almost a full Ghz o/c) I'm not sure if my 1.6A is maxed at 2.5(stable), or if my crucial 2100 is hitting the wall.

is it a possibility you have something running that does not like the pci out of spec??? 146 would be only 37 so maybe not....

have you tried with one stick of memory??

have you tried taking everything out and starting over to see if something else is limiting you???

I have ran 140 fsb on my board with 1.8 but maybe it is the board can't run stabily at anthing above a certain fsb period....

Are any other programs erroring or just 3dmark?? How about pcmark or prime95???

hey one more thing....

Have you tried putting back in the 1.8 and seeing if it runs the way it did prior??? make sure the mobo isnt damaged like mine possibly....

Duvie you better then anybody should know that i have run at every fsb speed ranging from 115 upto 146. if i didnt have any problems down there, why would i have problems up here?

im only using the one 512mb stick of Corsair XMS. (i sold the kingmax i was using)

its possible this is moboard limitation. others have msged me with the exact same problem. id be surprised tho - many are running beyond 147fsb.

everything errors beyond 146fsb - sometimes it errors on bootup.

using the 1.7v pin mod gives me 1.85v thru bios. and thats how im running the 1.8a now @ 1.85v.
(see my sig)

i already have the 1.8a back in and running 2.55ghz - everything is 100%.

I'm at 146FSB, too, at default voltage and can't seem to get any higher. I tried upgrading my ram to some Mushkin DDR400....No good. I still get windows and registry errors.

As for the Mushkin DDR400, at this FSB and a 4:5 divider, it's no different than having a stick of PC2100. Both perform relatively the same, mushkin up by almost 100 in Sandra memory scores. I tried using a 4:6 divider and my computer froze and killed my WD HDD (got a bunch of loud clicking sounds on boot-up). Otherwise, at 133, 4:6 works fine but i still get errors. No luck with aggressive ram timing either. 🙁

hey all, i'm at 151 fsb, stock hs and fan, running samsung pc2700 at 4:3, doing great (2.42 ghz)... so yeah, it is possible... this doesn't even get THAT hot, either... i'm real happy with this

nice OC Sachmho!
which moboard/bios are you using?

ive got another 1.6a on the way - gonna see if this one can beat my 1.8A OC 😉

thanx, i'm runnin a P4S333, real happy with it this far... I'm using the original bios; i tried others, such as the 1005 and 1004 for this board, and the one for the 533, yet all three of these bios disabled ide support, but my 1001 bios is doin fine for me, so all is well
