P4 1.6A CPU temp

From reading in the forums, I keep reading other people's cpu temps are in the 30's range. However, when my machine is idle, the lowest it'll ever go is 42-43 and my case temp varies from 25-27. I use the sunflower cooler with AS. Do I need to reapply the heatsink and the AS? Or is my temps ok?
 
which board and bios version...some boards have had very poor northwood support and have had temp and voltage reading problems...

My system at default speed and vcore (1.8a) gets 36c idle and 44c load....at 2.4ghz and 1.65v I get 38c idle and 47-48c load...I use avc (4000rpm) HSF and AS2....

before I used retail hsf and theraml pad and at default my 1.8 got 48c idle and 62c load...I suspected the msi board had initial reading errors as idle temps are less likely to move that much from use of as2 and gain in hsf rpm...I would have expected 3c idle and maybe load, not 12c idle and 18c load....

So what I am saying there are some boards reporting erroneous temps...
 
also in Motherboard Monitor, which sensor do I choose for my cpu. Is it the ASUS 2(CUSL2) or is it just the ASUS 2
 
ASUS 2 is the correct sensor. The "Cusl 2" is compensated to use with a different board, it reads about 10C higher than the "ASUS 2" sensor.
 
Hi I just recently bought a P4 1.6A + MSI 845 Ultra
Getting temp @ 45c at 1.6A idle is that ok?

Im using stock intel HSF and rip out the tape under heatsink and apply Artic Silver 3.


 
Case and CPU temps have alot to do with your room temperature. A person with air conditioning will certainly have lower temps than someone without.
 
1.6 @ 2.13 and it idles at 35, load @ 44
Getting temp @ 45c at 1.6A idle is that ok?
seems a bit high to me...might want to check to make sure its all set and that the as3 is applied correctly.

 
RageXP 45c idle is high, but nothing to worry about , However if you chose to o/c you should lower your case temps first , you can help quite a bit by organizing the inside of your case to allow for clear airflow.
 
45c @ idle is high unless temp readings are wrong. My 1.6A @ 2.4 with stock HS/Fan idles ~ 36 - 40c depending on case temp. Full load is ~ 48 - 52c.
 
All of this talk is use less unless you add in your room temperature. If Tchen811 has room temp 10 degress higher than edc03
then of course his cpu temp will be higher too.
 
I was getting temps that were around 60C idle from the ASUS pc probe with bios 1006.002... i just upgraded to beta bios 1006.003 on a Asus P4T-E... now my temps are 35C but now it doesn't read my cpu fan speed... the strange thing was that sandra was reading 37C both times...WTF??!!... try and explain that one to me. I have a 1.6a.
 
Hey the 1.6a northwood wont fry if it get hot right? it will just underclock its self if im right... right?

also what the max temp that i should keep an eye out for?

Max temp is 67C. Shortly after that it will begin to throttle back.

Awhile back on Toms Hardware, he tested the thermal protections in the P3, AMD, P4 chips. He pulled the entire HSF off of the P4 while playing Quake3, and he simply lost a lot of FPS as the chip throttled down. He replaced the HSF, and his FPS instantly went back up... no lockups or anything.
 
From my experiences reading posts on this board, the MSI boards give a higher temperature readout than any other board. I have a MSI 845 Ultra-ARU and my idle temps hover around 47-50 degrees. (AS3 has caused the idle temps to drop about 3 degrees now that it has had time to setup.) My idle temperatures range from between 60-65 degrees Celsius depending on what I run. (I test my system's stability by using the software that I want to use and using it for a while. I used an intense baseball simulator for about three hours straight and there was not a single hiccup. It's only when I use prime95 that I get the temperatures way up into the sixties. However, the system has yet to crash using Prime95).

I originally had a Thermaltake P4 478 Volcano as my hsf setup, but when I tried to remove the fan and put it in the opposite direction to see if it would improve my temperatures the screw holes got stripped and now won't grab onto the screws. (Thank god it was only a 9 dollar heatsink/fan.) So I've had to go back to the stock Intel hsf. I lapped that thing until it looked like a mirror then installed it. It's nice and quiet but my idle and load temperatures have gone up a bit. I'm using BIOS 3.4 from the MSI site and those are the readings I'm getting. However, my system is stable to my liking and I'm quite happy with it running at 2.4 GHz. (Had to go a little lower on the fsb and dropped it from 137 MHz to 133 MHz. I really can't tell the difference because my computer is the fastest thing I have ever used. 🙂)
