P3V4X ps/2 mouse detection failure

I have an early P3V4X (ICS clock generator) that won't detect most PS/2 mice.

I've tried 5 known working mice and it has only found 1. I haven't found a scroll mouse that it will see yet, but it gets the cheap junk 2 button mice every time. I have already tried changing the PS/2 setting in the BIOS from "Auto" to "Enabled". It didn't make any difference.

Any ideas before I go get a USB pointing device?

Thanks.

My p3v4x always recognized my logitech 3 button PS2 mice. There should be a IRQ setting in the bios for a PS2 connecter (im not too certain), make sure it is not disabled. I'd look and get you more info but my p3v4x is out of my system right now.

i have the 1003 bios, not quite newest u might try 1005

I had the other problem with my P3V4X. I bought one of those intelli-eye USB mouse. The system would not recognize it. I put the PS/2 adaptor on it & it was fine. Go figure.

I've got 1005. Will look through the BIOS more, but have already tried some PS/2 tweaks there.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Using an Intellimouse Optical here with my p3v4x. Went with the PS/2 connection and all is well. Haven't tried USB and don't want to...I like my 200hz poll rate.

Waddia mean early P3V4X with a ICS clock Gen? I have a two new P3V4X boards, one pre purple box with an ICS and a new purple boxed latest serial number, also ICS clock gen. Am I missing something here?
Thanks
Jim

I use my Microsoft optical hooked up to the PS2 port, cause I figure if the USB bus goes down, what are you gonna point with?

USB under Windows 9x doesn't work reliably 100% of the time. That's why it makes sense to only go USB when you're forced to do so. My USB mousey can do PS/2 with the adapter so that's what I did. If USBs reliablity goes up (or I someday upgrade to Win 2000 which may be better...?) I'll switch over cuz it does help free up irqs.

Try diabling USB legacy support in the BIOS. It creates a virtual link in the BIOS between the USB controller and the PS/2 ports and may create conflicts. If you're not using a USB keyboard and/or pointing device and/or DOS/Windows 3.x, you don't need legacy support at all.

GMJIM,

Acutally, I just thought the ICS generator chips were "early" models. But I know this one is because the guy I bought it from originially got it right after (I mean like the next day) after the board became available.

Painman,

Thanks for the suggestion -- it helped some. I tried disabling legacy USB by itself and nothing happened. So I switched the PS/2 BIOS setting from "Auto" to "Enabled" and now my P3V4X can detect all but one of my mice. The one that it cannot detect is a Genius ScrollMouse -- my favorite, of course.

O well. Thanks everyone for the ideas, and please post anything else you think might work.

There was a problem that existed with the very early batches of P3V4Xs with the PS/2 keyboard + mouse connector.

This was on version 1.01 of the PCB revision. This was fixed in PCB rev 1.02. To check if you have the dodgy connector, it is not manufactured by FOXCONN. FOXCONN PS/2 port is used on PCB rev 1.02 and above.

I guess I should have seen to ask what OS you are running?

I am running Windows 2000 IntelliMouse Explorer (laser eye) on my USB port but it works on my PS2 port too. Go figure, Microsoft products are very inconsistent.

Yeah USB Legacy support is too allow USB mice and keyboards to function in DOS and BIOS manipulation (keyboard anyway). This can cause problems with more intelligent OSes (as if Windows is intellegent).

I'm running Win98 first edition.

I've been wondering if the connector was flaky, but dont see any obviously loose connections (like broken solder dots or anything). I have the I/O shield on, so I can't tell if the connector was made by Foxxconn or not. I do remember seeing that name on the parallel port connector before I assmebled the board, though.

I'm not exactly a newbie, maybe I missed something -- How do I tell what PCB revision I have?

To ID your board: To the right of the AGP slot (or above it, depending on your perspective) you should see "P3V4X" silkscreened onto the board. Below that, in smaller type, is the rev. #. If you have a giant heatsink like an Alpha on your CPU, you may have to remove it to see the silkscreened markings.

Did you get a driver disc with your genius scrollmouse? Sometimes you have to use one. I have an old IBM mouse that I have to use the driver for with Win98. Didn't need one with Win95
Just a thought?

GMJIM-

Actually, I do have a driver disk and the Genius does need it for any special functions to work.

But I dont think this is the problem -- Win98 never even gets that far. When starting Win98, it gets past the startup screen but not to the desktop and the window pops up saying "Windows has not detect a mouse attached to your system blah, blah, blah... You may connect a serial mouse now. Before connecting a PS/2 mouse, you must first power off your computer".

Doesn't sound like a driver problem. Plus I've run this mouse on other systems without the special driver before without any trouble.

Thanks for the idea though. Still need to check my PCB revision...

I have an intellimouse optical and it recognized it fine. I use the USB port and had to disable the ps/2 communications port and update the drivers, but after that it works fine now. I am using WinMe and even though the OS said it wouldnt run right it does. maybe thats the reason the usb works so well.

I also have a MS Intellimouse Explorer and it works fine on the USB port. I just bought the P3V4X and it's the latest version. Now I'm wondering if I should move it to the PS2 port???? BTW, I'm running Windows 98se.

I just posted this this morning and then found this thread on a search for more info. Thank God I'm not alone with this problem! I thought I was loosing it last night. So, is there a fix for this problem yet? Seems I'm a month or so late on this posting.....below is my original post on the Tech Support section....

*****************************************************

I'm a newbie, this is my first from-scratch build, so I'm sure I'm probably missing some simple check-it-out here, but....

Last night I loaded Win98SE on a P3V4X + PIII 800EB + IBM 15Gb....had problems with not finding files and drivers on my start-up disk and the Win98 CD. That doesn't surprise me.

I have the keyboard working, but can't get Win98 to recognize the mouse. I've installed ps2 drivers from the CD using the Add Hardware in Control Panel. I can't seem to get the ASUS CD to work in order to install the Via 4 in 1 set. I'm really lost here. I'm sure it's something simple, but I can't see it.

I've moved the Microsoft ps2 Mouse to the plug-in on the supplied Serial Port adapter and still not recognized. I tried a different MS mouse. Is there someplace I should be looking for the driver? Is this related to not having the 4in1 pack installed?

If anyone can help walk me through this, I'd appreciate it. Working without a mouse sucks. Thanks in advance.....Bobby

I'll add that I have the same pop-up as * jkersenbr * who wrote - - "Windows has not detect a mouse attached to your system blah, blah, blah... You may connect a serial mouse now. Before connecting a PS/2 mouse, you must first power off your computer".

I just changed the Bios settings for diabling ps2 legacy and the ps2 setting from auto to enabled.....now I'm frozen on the bootup....I've had problems with drive A --- "Not ready reading drive A - Abort, Retry, Fail?"....and I'm getting no response from the keyboard. I've been hitting the "A" key to abort and it drops me into Win98...now nothin'....bummer.
