The power shown on Kill A Watt, in Watts, is the power given to the power supply. The Apparent Power shown on Kill A Watt, in VA, is the Apparent Power given to the power supply.

Watts = VoltAmps * Power Factor. Volt Amp numbers are without regard to what degree the amperage draw of the device leads or lags the voltage curve. Watts takes the lead or lag into consideration. Both values are measured at the wall. How much the PSU is putting out is irrelevant though load does vary the uncorrected power factor. Efficiency of the PSU = Watts out/ Watts In.

On a related subject, I need a line splitter so I can use my clamp multimeter to measure current, but I can't find one on the net that doesn't cost ten bucks to ship, which almost doubles the price. Any tips?

Meh, I never use that 😉 I also got in the habit of bringing security bits and a pair of pliers, you get some wacky connectors on older computers!

I use my DMM (digital multimeter) all the time checking cables, connections, verifying RAM, core, etc. voltages. Just as indispensable as the KAW.

my father has brought this kind of clip on "kill-a-watt" from work one day. it looks like a mix of a huge monkey wrench with a head like a table clamp, it clamps on a power cable and it can read the power draw for that cable. I wonder what those are really called and if they do what the kill-a-watt does?
