I've heard bad things about tigerdirect, but I never ordered from them myself. does anyone have any tigerdirect input? good or bad, I wanna hear some stories. It seems like they have really good prices otherwise.
A few months back intel offered the retail PIII 800 on a retial 815eeal board for 199. with shipping and tax it was 225. I'm not sure if its still available. I got in on it. You needed to attend there info session, but it was entertaining anyway. The site was something like chipandtips.com
I bought three sticks of PC133 128MB RAM (it was not listed as any particular brand name on the website) for $48 per stick about 6 weeks ago. The RAM turned out to be Kingston, and does run fine for me. Stuff came fast, price was right, and I agree with a previous poster, they have been around as a "glossy mailorder" company for a long while, the only really good deals are of course, on the website.
the "e" stands for the fact that it runs on a 100mhz bus. there are also intel pentium 3's with the suffix "eb" which run on a 133mhz bus.
I thought the PIII does not have 900.
I checked the intel site, it says that PIII only avail in 933, 866, 850, 800, 750, 733, 700, 667, 650, 600, 550, 533, 500 and 450 MHz Clock Speeds Spec here
Can any one tell me what kind of power supply this cpu uses? currently have a Gateway Pentium II 350 and 200watt power supply. Do I need to buy a 250 or 300watt to power this cpu?
What kind of fan do I need for this cpu mother board combo? Does this cpu come with its own heat sink or fan?
IS this MOBO easy to o-clock or is it one of those intel boards that dont let you do anything like my current gateway board.
As you can tell still a ultra newbie at this upgrade stuff so please be gentle.
ok to clear things up...i also was confused at first...so i called tigerdirect and they told me that there is a P3 900 100fsb cpu. Also the mobo is retail but cpu is OEM (no Heat Sink/Fan). The CSR told me a regular HSF (not for Overclockers) is only $5.
Then I called Intel. The CSR told me that Intel does not make a P3 900Mhz cpu in the retail box. But she told me it could be an OEM cpu. I asked her if she could check to see if the indeed make an OEM cpu with those specs. She told me she does not have any way of checking. But i guess Intel could make cpu according to some OEM's specs. So I think this cpu is legit.
to dicktinsay,
you can use your regular power supply as long as you're not adding too much to it. The Intel D815EEA mobo is not overclocker friendly, so you may just be stuck with the 900 Mhz 100fsb.
I really think this is an EB processor. And it will not overclock well/at all with this motherboard combo. But it is a nice cpu/board if you want the sound, video, and I believe it will have the 10/100 networking built into the motherboard, as well. Very stable.
Dickinsay: Yes, you will need a 250 watt power supply as a minimum... get a 300 watt if you want to have ample power, however. That way you won't have to worry if you get a high-power video card or add a tv tuner and a cd burner and a dvd drive or whatnot, and don't have to worry about the cpu.
Cybordolphin..the P3 900 only cum's in 100FSB and it's a cCO.(The cCO are known to overclock better then cBO ) This is the first. I saw this cpu forsale but with a motherboard.I don't think anyone can pick-up this cpu by itself. Intel was sell this cpu only to the big dogs like HP.
I run the PIII 900 on my CUSL2. GOt it free from Intel at a career fair. I've OCd it to just above 1 GHz. No problems in Win98 but win2k freezes sometimes. I run it at 900 most of the time though.
Well if it helps you guys at all, I found out about this deal last week at tigerdirect. I had no interest in the intel MB because of the lack of overclocking, and for that price it wasn't that great of a deal with the MB. I purchased the CPU by itself for 229.00. It is in fact a 100mhz FSB muliplier of 9X cC0. I am running it on an ABIT SA6R with a RAID 0 array. I have had it running for approx 5 days non-stop and so far I have hit 1008mhz in windows 2000 perfectly stable. If anyone has any doubts about this CPU, it is true and tigerdirect has them, the story that I heard was that they were OEM CPu's made for resellers such as compaq and thye are selling the surplus. I will let you know how my overlcoking goes as I break the CPU in and I receive my ALPHA cooler this week.
