P3-700 is very overclockable....most make it to 933 at least.

A Celeron 2 at 850 or so, has approximately the same performance as a P3-700.

Thanks andiehuy so a P3 700 at around 900 would be much faster than any celeron could do. so upgrading from my C366@550 to a P3700 overclocked to 900 i would see big improvement in speed??

I was faced with the same delemma. I comes down to two things. See if your motherboard can support the coppermine processors (voltage, multipliers), and what speed ram you have.

If your mobo can support coppermine then you don't need a new one for either processor. Now here is your decision maker. If you have PC133 then get the P3. If you have PC100 then get the Celeron.

I had PC100 ram. There was no way I was going to go out and buy 256megs of new ram to OC a processor. The Celery let me get 945mhz out of my same ram and mobo, with only spending around $100.

That was the smart decision. I'll wait a little while before I go out and buy a new mobo and ram. I'll wait untill there are some real changes in technology.

Not all 700's make it to 933. They will usually do 110-115 FSB no problem. 133 is not guaranteed.

i ditto the above comments.

i wanted to upgrade my chip from a celeron2 533@800 to a P3 700@933. that required me to upgrade my ram from PC100 to PC133. to top it off i decided to upgrade my mobo as well from BE6-2 to CUSL2(although it wasn't really necessary).

the P3 kicks ass but remember, it's about twice as much.

btw, i was running my C2 533@800 with 1.60v
right now, my P3 700 is running 980 at 1.75v

u should be choose p3 over celeron, p3 more faster then celeron, now not all p3 700 can do 933, it's depend your luck to get the overlockable chip :p my p3 700 just can do 882 here, i ever try 933 and stable for 14 hour ( setihome) but after i restart my computer it's wont boot again at 933, i dont know why, but it's hurt me :p

I got a 700E guarenteed to do 933 from compuwiz1. I even used my Corsair PC100 but I had to turn it down to CAS3 on an Abit BE6 board and my TNT2 Viper 770ultra didn't seem to mind as Half-Life ran like a charm but my UT only would run at 868(124FSB) but I ran Seti for weeks at 933 with no problem at default voltage even. I have upgraded though, only because I wanted to though. I'm going to try 980 soon. ;)

Test your SDRAM, before you settle for Celery.

Some PC100 will run 133 at CAS3, or even CAS2. It just depends on when and by what company your module was made, and what chips they decided to stick on it. Find a friend that has a stable 133 rig, and ask him/her if you can plug in your PC100 to test it out.

Good luck,

Well I have pc 133 ram from mushkin in my system so should be good to go with a P3 700 also i have the soyo6ba IV board so i think i should be able to do at least 140 mhz with my setup.
