P3 600 the fastest 512K L2 non copermine processor available?

I have a problem.

I own a Supermicro P6DBS dual BX chipset slot 1 based motherboard. I want to upgrade. What is the fastest chip i can throw in there? It can't handle FCPGA processors or any copermine processors (IE, those E or EB based chips). Only the older original 512k 0.25 micron chips.

I believe the fastest is the 600Mhz version but is there a 650mhz version?

Or is there another way around this, with perhaps a slocket adapter? This motherboard does not have manual adjustment of its FSB or voltage (only multiplier, which is no good), either by dip switches or in the bios, so i would need a slocket adapter that has voltage regulation on it, that can tone down from 2.3 volts from the motherboard to 1.6 or whatever is used in the FCPGA copermine chips.

I can settle with 600MHz, but id like to know all possible options for this upgrade.

Thanks

TL

Get a pair of Slot 1 P3 XXXE. They have Slot 1 Es and get CB0, unless your board doesn't have less then 1.6V then you need to get slocket ones.

http://www.pcnut.com/parts/cpu.htm

They have SECC2 (slot one) CB0, so you can probably go up to 850.. as long as they make them..

yep thats great and all, but i need a slocket that will tone the voltage from 2.3 to 1.6 for the E based chips

My motherboard is SET IN STONE at 2.3 volts, I CAN NOT CHANGE THAT. Thus if i want to use a copermine, i need a slocket that can take 2.3 volts and regulate it down to 1.6 volts for the FCPGA processor.

Slot 1 "E" CB0's are COPERMINES!! I CANT RUN COPERMINES!! NOT WITH OUT A SLOCKET!! :)

Then id have to make sure the bios can handle it, however on supermicros web site, it says that bios rev 3.0 can support the microcode, but says not to go above 600mhz or else "undesirable effects may occur". :(

I can not CHANGE the voltage

* No there are no jumpers
* No there is no bios edit

So other than getting an imanginary slocket, im stuck at 600? Unless there is a 650 MHz 512K 0.25 micron chip out there?

anyone???

I looked at the Supermicro site page for your board and at the BIOS download page etc. ( unfortunately I lost the links I started to list here, but I'm sure you can find them). I could not tell from the meager BIOS description whether the revision listed will support Copppermines, but it does not look like it, since there's only one BIOS listed. It looks like the board only supports P3 Katmais (.25 micron), which topped out at 600, and that's that. Anything faster is a Coppermine.

I don't think a 'slotket' is gonna help in a case like this. The BIOS usually rules.

Generally this type of board is not made for a lot of tweaking but is for the pro who wants instead stability and all that fancy-shmancy stuff like dual CPU's, on-board SCSI, etc. I think you'll have to settle for that.

P.S.
And don't try to use a 600B (133 MHz) either !

600Mhz is top of the line for Pentium3 Katmai.

There are two 600s though, the 600 (no letters) and the 600B.

The B runs on a 133Mhz FSB (still the 512k, .25um katmai tho) your board probably won't like that either.

If you want help, QUIT YELLING! :)

Soltek made a slocket with an onboard voltage regulator which will supply 1.6 vcore via jumpers. I have no idea where to get it or how much it costs. Hard to tell what "undesireable effects" means, probably nothing as many motherboard manufacturers made dire predictions about running coppermines on older BX's, but they worked OK for the most part.

Ah, but there's another Slocket that does voltage adjustments. :) The new Iwill Slocket III has its own 4 pin power connector, and can supply any voltage you need. I'm not sure if its out in stores yet though. Just make sure that your motherboard can ID a Coppermine P3...you won't have to worry about voltage if the board won't even recognize the processor. :)

Ahh, didn't know that you had a 2.3v.. then you really need a slocket. But they do have coppermine slot1s but that wouldn't work..

Ulysses is making sense again, as usual! Bios support is crucial. without it, you're pi$$ing into the wind.

I'm pretty darn sure they made a 650 Mhz Katmai, just to keep up with AMD while they were finishing the Cumine.

No, it stopped at 600 MHz, unless Intel possibly made a few 650 MHz models and only sold them to OEMs like Dell. Even if they did make 650 MHz models, you're going to have a very hard time finding them.
