newsgroups and irc aren't software :p

More like: Newsleecher and mIRC, but who would use IRC when they have usenet?

Bittorrent requires a struggle to find new sites every time your main one gets shut down. There's no "searches" and not a large library. It is fast for true p2p though.

Ares is like a bastard nephew to eMule. Emule can be slow especially dependant on your sharing ratio. It does however have many great features such as comments, block lists, fake reporting system, search, etc. It also has a huge user base, and probably the best retention.

My recommendation is newsleecher through usenetserver.com and eMule. Use newsleecher to get most of what you want while building up an ul/dl ratio on eMule to get those on demand files you may have missed on nntp. IRC to me is just a time killer. There are nzb sites (similar to torrent trackers) for Newsleecher also making header sorting a thing of the past.

Howdy All,

Now that most P2P are being closed down ( I was using WinMx till it got closed a few weeks ago). Who is next in line? WinMx I thought was good because I never got a corrupt file, and it did not seem to be loaded with spyware/etc.

There's some info over at slyck.com regarding a host-file trick.
I haven't looked for days... but it was pretty active a week or so ago.

Still searching for a new P2P that is free and not loaded with crap (i.e spyware etc.)..
WinMx has a patch but is still full of problems trying to connect. :-(... I MISS MY WinMx..I have researched most of the others and they all seem to have sypware imesh, limewire, morpheus, emule,Kazaa... Who do you think is the best bet to replace WinMx?

you really should check into torrents instead of p2p crap.

there is simply no good reason to continue using p2p.

Main reason I don't use Torrents is that everything you do is so easily tracked...
I don't use p2p a whole lot, but when I do emule does the trick. It's slow but effective. Torrents may be faster and better in many ways, I just don't trust them.

That "p2p crap" includes Bit Torrent. Its peer to peer based around a centralized server.

But i can find NADA with bit torrent. P2P is a lazy mans way to hear the top 40 on this desktop. Please enlighten me with a good bit torrent search engine.

It really depends on what you are downloading, wether they are popular or not, if you want fast downloads as opposed to a wider selection and slow downloads and any preferences etc.

Last I read, the creator of WinMX has relocated to another country, and might resurrect the software. It would be nice.
I thought it odd that it was shut down - I'd thouht that WinMX was totally decentralized, and couldn't be shut down. Guess not.:(

Direct Connect has always been good to me.
For a client, I find that RevConnect is much better than DC++.

www.slyck.com has a list of clients for each network.
