p180 gets pretty darn hot with my new 8800gts

hey guys i got the p180 case, and i just installed a 8800gts in it, and the card gets extremely hot pretty quickly...

all the fans in the case are antec tri-cool fans, i have one i top of the case, 1 in the back, 1 in the PSU area, and one intake from the front where the other HD area is...

i am wondering if there is anything i can do to keep my case a bit cooler,
any one have suggestions for new fans that are better than the tri-cools and possibly quieter?

thanks!

What are you considering "extremely hot"? I have an 8800 GTS 640MB in my p180 with just top / back / front fans (no PSU or CPU fans) and my card sits at 58 degrees. From what I understand the 8800s run a little toastier than previous nVidia cards.

well when i touch it its flaaaaming hot...
im looking for some better fans for inside my case since i heard the antec tri-cool fans arent that great..

Take of the sidepanel and see if it makes a difference. Did you also remove 2 of the expansion slots on the back of the case so the card can properly release the hot air?

Increase the fan speed on your GTS using rivatuner. It will help exhausting some more heat from your case.

Do not get that PCI slot fan. I had one, and honestly, it sucked. Besides, the one you linked to isn't long enough, it will blow air on top of your card instead of onto the fan that's on the card itself.

60c idle is just fine so don't worry about it ...

This is an exhaust fan marc, It may or may not help but this type of fan is noisy. You need to get more fresh air into your case and around your vid card. Slow down or stop your top fan, your front intakes on high and maybe something like that slot cooler under your card. some one mentioned opening the expansion card slots, Can you zip tis a 60 or 80mm fan to them blowing out? I think the prob is stagnant warn air under your card. Can you mount another intake in your 5.25 drive bays?
Yates are good but your antecs are fine too, the 180 is a tough case to cool as it was meant more for quiet.

thanks! i installed rivatuner and all... it seems like my card stays at 60 idle, havent tried gaming yet...

can any one link to these yate loon fans?
are they loud?
i am also thinking about buying http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16835200019 to put under the gts
thanks a lot!

I can confirm that having a slot cooler (a quiet one, though...) under my 8800GTX in a P180 reduced temps, by about 5-6C. Probably won't be the same for you as the GTS isn't quite as long... but the GTX dumps a ton of hot air into the case.

I put the HDDs in the bottom bay (which required removal of the PSU-area fan), and removed the middle HDD bay altogether so that the front intake fan could blow right across the GTS. Then I put the fan that was in the PSU area at an angle under the GTS to blow air up at it. This way, air comes at it from the front, and from underneath. And since I sealed all the rest of the case openings manually (pretty easy job if you're not too anal about it; you can read about it elsewhere on these forums), moving th ebottom fan doesn't mess up my negative-pressure flow that brings air in the front and out the top/back. GPU temps seem pretty good so far...

I can't remember where I saw it, but someone took off the plastic cover and fan off the HS and then zip-tied an 80mm fan to the HS to blow on it, and it worked better.

i already have my 2 HDs in the bottom compartment, and i have the top compartment removed... i didint have to remove the PSU fan from its area, i have my hds down there the fan, and the psu..

i have the fan blowing from the front of the case towards the back. i have also sealed the VGA fan addon on the back of the case with some tape..

thanks!

If you're concerned about the 8800 creating a lot of heat, I suggest you move the bottom fan from where it is (it's blowing toward the PSU, so it's not really cooling anything that needs it right now) to underneath the GPU blowing up at it. Can't hurt to try, at least...

Hey, I haven't gotten back to my campus to actually try it out (and I won't be able to get back for another week).
I was just wondering if anyone can tell me for the P180 and 8800GTS, if you can mount a intake fan on the top HD cage and still fit the 8800GTS in. I know I can do that with my 7800GT, but I know the 8800GTS is longer. If the 8800GTS is too big, I plan on removing that HD cage and mounting the intake fan farther forward, but right now it is sitting on the back of that top HD cage, and I'd like to keep it there, since it would be closer to the GPU and thus better able to cool it off.
thanks

I have the 8800GTS in my P180B, it fits

In fact, I installed both of my HDs in the bottom tunnel, and the top three 5.25" slots are free, so I installed a Scythe Kama bay with a silent 120mm fan

I think chiew is saying that he has the fan on the BACK of the top HDD bay, which will NOT fit with the 8800GTS. You should remove the top HDD bay and put the front intake fan wherever you want to in the space vacated by the top HDD bay. I suggest you put it right at the front to have the most access to cooler fresh air, but if you want it closer to the GPU, give it a shot. Also, you can use the front intake at the front of the case, and then put another fan, perhaps smaller, under the 8800GTS for extra cooling of the GPU. Of course, this assumes you can fit all your HDDs in the bottom HDD bay...if not, you'll have to get creative if you want a fan blowing right on the 8800 from the front...

hey cytosin, yeah you read what i said right. thanks for the advice. i have 4 hard drives, and theyre all in the lower bay, fortunately 🙂

Have you checked the temperature of the vid card by way of the Nvidia control panel? You may find that it isn't as hot as you think it is. Check it before you do anything else.

IF you upped the fan speed in Riva Tuner and you still want to decrease your temps, get some $4 yate loons from jab-tech and $1 worth of zip-ties from Wal-Mart.

You can remove just the plastic housing from the heatsink, kill the heatsink fan and just zip-tie two 120mm fans right to the heatsink. It looks like shit but for under $10 you cant beat it, its not like the p180 has a window anyway.
