I may put the full book together some day, but my running theory about what happened to the mental health, general intellect, and economic and social relevance of the GOP over the last decade is a really strong marriage between 2 solid pillars of fascism generation: recruiting apocalyptic evangelical sociopaths into the party (60s-70s Reagan, endorsed by Nixon), and Reagan's direct assault on mental health care and funding in this country (we lost some 85% of dedicated mental health infrastructure by the end of the 80s, and funding for this has never recovered.) These things directly created the swelling homelessness and crime problems, vastly increased incidence of police murder on the streets while police are now dealing with this decades-long influx of mentally unwell people living on the streets, with no other option, etc.

These factors also made it easy for the GOP to destroy the pension system, introduce the "401k" model, and create something called the "finance industry," which is really just a looter class of undereducated assholes that got planted in between employers and their new earning potential...which is why 70% of their lesser value today, compared to where we were heading in about 1978, was transferred to this new industry of middlemen asshole looters. Look! You get to control all your wealth now! ...as long as it is controlled by these totally honest drooling shithumans that are now granted the authority to charge you 1-5% fees for the benefit of essentially losing most of your money while they play games with your money by trading paper that they pretend to understand! what a country!
