A protester lowers himself down a rope from a bridge to a highway to escape from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University campus and from the police. Dozens of Hong Kong protesters escaped the police siege at the campus by shimmying down a rope from a bridge to awaiting motorbikes in a dramatic and perilous breakout that followed a renewed warning by Beijing of intervention to end the crisis engulfing the city. Police said the demonstrators inside Polytechnic University had no option but to come out and surrender.

A demonstrator using a street mirror as a makeshift shield takes part in a protest against the government in Santiago. Chilean political parties agreed to a referendum on replacing the country’s Pinochet-era constitution, in a deal that could help end nearly a month of sometimes violent political unrest. Much of the protesters’ anger has focused on Chile’s 1980 constitution, which is seen as the embodiment of Augusto Pinochet’s neoliberal model, prioritising a market-driven economy but failing to adequately guarantee healthcare, education and pensions.

Morales stepped down following nationwide protests over suspected vote-rigging in the 11 October election in which he claimed to have won a fourth term in office. But his departure, far from resolving Bolivia’s crisis, has only deepened it. After his allies in the legislature resigned, the next in the line of succession was a rightwing Christian who served as deputy president of the senate, Jeanine Áñez.
