The sentence for that attack still seems absurd though.

I found this:
http://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/gang-women-assaulted-sent-jail/story-13941821-detail/story.html

He said he accepted the women may have felt they were the victims of unreasonable force from the victim's partner.

Nur, who joined in the attack after initially acting as a peacemaker, said it was in fact the victim's partner who had been racially abusive, but Mr Bide-Thomas said that was not accepted by the prosecution.

Seeing the original CCTV footage would help (apparently the Mail posted an edited version which didn't include the start of the altercation), but it seems to me that this is a story of an argumentative, violent and drunk group of 3 women going after another woman, that woman's partner goes over the top with violence in response beyond self-defence, causing a fourth person to change from trying to be a peacemaker to helping the women and taking part in the violence rather than defusing the situation. In short, a drunken escapade clusterfuck.

The three ended up with 150 hours of community service rather than just "freed with a suspended sentence" as the Mail spun it. IMO a judge should deal with drunken dickheads this way (assuming that the resulting circumstances are similar), then if they develop a history of it, the sentences should be ramped up somewhat.
