I'm apprehensively awaiting the first one to die in one of their rockets, too.
(Speaking generally) As a human spaceflight safety engineer we are doing our best to make sure that doesn’t happen. That being said regardless of spaceflight provider spaceflight is inherently risky.

It’s always a tough balance between safety, budget, and schedule. Get the balance right and you have a safe successful mission. Mess up that balance and you either never fly or something bad happens.

Right, the inherent risk is what keeps it in the back of my mind. It might be safer now than it was in 1970, but you're still strapping a rocket to your back to launch yourself into orbit. Things can go wrong.

So far only a few have gone for a ride, Bezos being the first (Branson went the same month). Others may choose to do so eventually.
