Well, if you want free medicine then you need investing tax money into developing medicine. The reason you have so expensive medicine is your broken health care system.
Look at EU vs US

That's because capitalism drives our medical system...not socialism. Our medical professionals put $$$ before patients. (yes, I know...that's a vicious blanket statement...many of our medical professionals REALLY care about their patients, but the SYSTEM is driven by $$$...and that filters down through the various professions. I'm NOT saying they don't necessarily deserve it, especially with the educational requirements, but registered nurses make a fckn killing... https://nursesalaryguide.net/
Doctors (especially specialists) can really rake in the bucks. (but medical school costs and malpractice insurance take their chunks) https://weatherbyhealthcare.com/blog/annual-physician-salary-report

Yup, the problem is not those who develop medicine, but how the healthcare system handles it.
It is "fun" to se how universal health care always is coupled with socialism in US, where as most of the rest of OECD it is simply considered a basic right next to clean water.

The U.S. government is, by far, the single biggest source of funding for new drug research and development. The government then allows private companies to patent drugs partially funded by the government. We also allow drug patents to be “evergreened” by which companies can extend patents far beyond the normal time period. The U.S. legalized the most lucrative forms of corruption.

We also allow them to openly advertise to the general public ("Tell your Dr that Exolactipryzy is right for you") in amounts that dwarf the $$$ they actually spend on R&D. Every other commercial on cable/broadcast is for some drug.
