Do you have any idea how few churches are like that? How much do you want to bet that's a TV pastor? How many of those do you think there are in relation to all churches/pastors? It's such a fraction of a fraction of a percent that amending the Constitution to tax churches/pastors is laughable.
No Constitutional amendment is required to tax the property of churches. IMHO, in a reasonable world, the assets of churches that are used for charitable activity would remain tax free while the rest would be taxed on the same basis we tax health clubs, country clubs, and the like. In the world we actually live in, I don't think we are up to the task. I think sectarian bias in appraisals would creep into the system leading to bitterness and endless lawsuits. Therefore, as much as I'd like to see churches pay property taxes on the same basis as any other social club, I don't support doing so.
