Buzz Aldrin’s boot leaves a sharp imprint in the lunar soil on 20 July 1969. The surface is composed of rock fragments, most no bigger than the finest of human hair, that have been broken off larger rocks during meteorite impacts and then broken into smaller pieces in subsequent impacts.
