Nested quotes are fine when holding information pertinent to the continuing discussion, just not for unrelated or no longer pertinent material.

Above is the guidelines that I have used.

In P&N & OT, when they get past a level of 3 or so, I will usually PM the culprits to ask them to trim when no longer relevant.
