i would say p3 are easier to build and less hassle. I myself got a tbird but if you are willing to tweak your motherboard such as the abit kt7. for 800mhz the athlon tbird seems a bit more cheaper. But performance wise they are pretty much not that much different.

AMD because intel would never have released a p3 800mhz if amd was not there they would strech out their profit to the max. The athlon is cheaper and faster at 800 mhz.The Athlon mobo(socket a) wil be compatible with future cores(mustang, etc).

did you even read anton's question? he's interested in the chip, not the business model. geez, answer the question...

Anton - it depends what you need it for. if you're interested in business apps and floating point calculations, the t-bird is definitely the way to go. if you're interested in gaming, go for the p3. now keep in mind that we are talking about miniscule differences, as the 2 chips split the benchmarks. there is also a greater chance that apps will have SSE instructions, which are designed for the p3.

that being said let's talk cost. the t-bird is cheaper than a p3, but a socket-a mobo is more expensive than a socket-370 or slot 1 mobo. if you combine cpu+mobo, they cost about the same. the p3 will run a lot cooler than a t-bird and requires less power. but with an adequate heatsink and amd approved power source that should not be an issue. also, the amd mobos require a little bit more tweaking than the 440bx.

A previous discussion on the subject. - Read this first and it will keep us from discussing the same things again...

do a search over this topic in the anand forums, you will get a whole bunch of results. p3 800eb will be a lot better than the 800e because of the 133 bus, probably a little better than the amd chip then too, not sure. For overclocking, the 800e is better because of lower bus, and then when you overclock, it is much better than the amd chip

Personally I have stuck with Intel, currently PIII700. I do so because of the following:

1. Cheap, reliable motherboards. Using Asus CUBX 440BX at the moment.
2. Performance-O-Plenty for everything I do.
3. SSE, not a huge deal by any means, but it seems like it is catching on.

I don't think Athlon/Duron's are bad. The thing that shy's me away are the motherboard chipsets currently available. AMD's 750 is somewhat of a dog and I just can't get myself worked up over VIA chipsets.

Also, I don't really understand the "Chipzilla" stigma that Intel has become pegged with. Yes they are big and recently they have made a few minor mistakes (Not like AMD has not had it's problems in the past). OK I'll grant you that the PIII 1.13Ghz was a large type blunder. Intel is, however, still a very innovative company and has done more for the PC than just about anyone. As for Intel wanting to maximize profits on their product, if you were an Intel investor or employee I don't think you would be singing the "those bastards" tune. I kinda like the competition that has developed between AMD and Intel over the past year, and I own stock in both companies.

OK, I'll get off my soap box. Good luck with your new system.
