I bought this 4 bay firewire case, came with 4 hotswap trays pre mounted. It connects and reads/writes just fine, but it makes the computer extremely slow during a transfer, does not maintain steady data rates, and if I try to access more than one drive at a time, windows reports that the drive is no longer and that data loss may have occurred. What is going on? At first, I set all the jumpers to cable select, so I don't have to remember to put the master in the 1 and 3 slots and the slave in 2 and 4, but I had these problems, so I manually set the slave/master pairs. The card is a generic SOHO firewire card, with one cable going to each FW interface. I haven't tried it on my audigy (which I got working on my iPod recently, if you read my other post)
What gives? I got this case so my power supply won't be taxed so much, I previously had 7 hard drives and a CD drive in there, had some boot problems. Is there any sort of firmware or drivers that will work better? One symptom of weirdness, is whenever read/writing to one drive, both LEDs flash in unison, as if it were reading/writing to both drives simultaneously.
I have used firewire for a long time now, on both Mac and PC, and never had this problem, although I have never used dual drive+ cases.
My system is as follows
Albatron KT600
Athlon XP 2700+
Windowx XP Pro SP1 (SP2 broke iTunes)
1GB ram
Rocketraid card with 4 200GB drives RAID 5
Radeon 9600Xt
Audigy 2
also, my other comp, a shuttle witn nforce2 has the exact same issue, so I suspect it is the FW/IDE bridge board. The case can support 2 more boards, so I could put them all as master, but that would cost a lot.
