A couple days ago my back was hurting a bit, but really it didn't stop me from doing anything. This morning it actually went away..but just a few minutes ago I was helping my dad move some boxes of tile which weighed at LEAST 80 lb. and after about the 4th trip around, I could hardly move without some sort of agonizing pain.

And now, about 20 minutes later, it's still hurting just as badly, and the only thing I can do without feeling pain is to lie down or sit with my back perpendicular to my legs. Any type of compression and I'll just die.

What can I do? Would ice or something help? Or should I just lie down which felt quite good.

I doubt its anything serious though...you should be fine sitting, even though it might hurt a little bit...if it gets worse from just sitting there call your doctor and see whay they say.

Can you tell if it's a muscle pain or a nerve pain. A muscle pain will be a sore, tired kind of pain, and nerve pain will be a sharp pain that will shoot through your back and legs. If it's a muscle pain take 4 advil then go to the doctor if it's real bad, if it's a nerve pain take whatever pain medicine you got and go to the doctor. And next time keep your back straight when you lift, squat to pick stuff up.

Had a back problem a couple of years back ... it turned out to be caused by 2 bulging disks. I was in a lot of pain for about 3-4 months. Sitting upright for long periods was definitely forbidden. I avoided surgery by losing weight and exercising and getting a shot of steroids directly in the spine.... big ass needle between the vertebrae while lying on a gurney with my knees pulled up to my chin. YOW! That WILL motivate one to do quit doing dumb things that mess up the back.

Strengthening the trunk and back muscles, combined with the steroids and weight loss, made surgery unnecessary for me.

The medicial experts say that 95% of all back pain goes away pretty much by itself in 3-4 weeks.

Using alternating heat and ice can help a lot to relieve acute pain, but you have to work at it for a while .... 20min ice, 20min heat, repeat repeatedly

Good luck and try to rest up :D
