People were expecting a movie about alien invasion, which was only an obscure background item in Signs. The real story here was the journey of a broken man to regain his own belief system, and in fact his own life. To say that Signs was stupid is a shallow interpretation, it was probably one of the best, most well thought out movies of 2002, but since there were no big budget special effects, no aliens exploding on glass windows, no laser guns or big, impressive spaceships, people blew it off as a failure. No doubt the trailers shown were misleading, but that would be the fault of a poor marketing team more than anything. Regardless, the movie made a good deal of money, as it deserved to, since it was well scripted, the acting was superb, and it did an excellent job of telling the story Shyamalan intended it to, regardless of whether or not that story is the one people were expecting when they walked into the theater. I never enjoyed Shyamalan's previous movie, Unbreakable, but Signs actually gave me a better understanding of Unbreakable, which takes the same path Signs does. For fans of massive action and suspense (although Signs did have quite a bit of suspense), then yes, both of these movies were slow, but for people who enjoy a lot of psychological meat in their movies, Signs does the job in spades.

What he said. Shamalyan's trilogy is just wonderful to behold, especially if you have an open mind and don't come to them expecting something in particular. His films are truly unique and special.

UNBREAKABLE

For those of you who loved 6th Sense and were disappointed with Unbreakable (and considerably so with Signs as well), I can help you see Unbreakable in a much different light.

It is a story of pure messianic metaphor with Old Testament references throughout - it asks the following question:

DO GOOD AND EVIL EXIST? AND IF SO, WHY IS THERE EVIL?

(Please PM me for a brief article on the metaphor and meaning of Unbreakable)

Signs takes this same idea further ... A fantastic idea, truly about faith and what it means to believe not only in one G-d, but that G-d is one.

Price is as low as $14.99, thanks to a price match from best buy. But the "deal" here is that this movie isn't released until tuesday.

So not only can you get it early, you can get it at the best price early. Some people out there are just waiting for Tuesday so they can pick this up, and now they don't have to.

If this were windows XP two days before it was supposed to be released you people would be all over it ;) haha.

Anyway, I personally liked the movie. It had plot twists thick enough to cut like a steak. I love that sorta thing.

I think the Matrix has the same references in a much much better movie.

Signs and Unbreakable sucked @ss in my opinion. 6th Sense was awesome though.

i just watched the movie last night...i cant say i like the wizard of oz solution....but not a bad movie at all...when you watch a sci-fi, or any movie for that matter, you gotta let your mind go a bit...otherwise youve wasted your cash

Yeah, I loved Sixth Sense and figured that director guy was good. He went downhill from there. I liked (not loved) unbreakable. Then signs, ugh. I hated that. In sixth sense, the suprise of the movie was that the guy was dead through the whole movie. In unbreakable, it was the revealing of the bad guy. What was it in signs? That the aliens have landed? Blah. Way way too slow too.

Well, what can I say except you missed the point of the movie. Not all directors follow the same formula in every movie. If every M. Night Shyamalan sticked to the "suprise ending" formula that made him popular in the Sixth Sense he would be a pretty boring director. In fact I think what ends up happening in Signs with the aliens is more of a joke to annoy people who wanted a surprise ending and didn't pay attention to what the movie was really about. It has much more to do with the characters(see Krakn3Dfx's post) and building up anticipation than aliens and plot. It is that building up of anticipation and anxiety, making people think there is some huge surprise ending, that I think has made so many hate the movie. For those bored by the film because they expected a mindless action film with aliens may I suggest xXx (Worst movie I saw in theatres last year).

The Matrix does have similar references - but much more messianic in overtone than Unbreakable (and Signs) whose messages are about individuals who are all extraordinary, versus "The One". That subtle difference is an important one - and which is what will make Unbreakable be a movie worth watching 50 years from now as a movie with a message, and the Matrix part of a Trilogy sci-fi classic.

I doubt its a mistake, I know people who got Fellowship of the Rings several days early. They probably write it up as a per-order to avoid breaking the street date.
As for the movie, I thought it was good. I didn't like what happened with the kid, but the movie as a whole was good. And just a little hint if anybody had a problem with the movie because they misunderstood it: It wasn't about aliens.

Okay... so Shyamalan has to "trick" his audience to believing the movie is about something else in order to make sales?

But he did stick to the "surprise ending" formula for his trilogy to date... the endings of Unbreakable and Signs was surprising... who expected those endings? :Q

It's just underlying themes. But he still does a good job of it.

I was entertained by the plot of the movie. Afterwords, when I started thinking about it, I was astounded by the underlying theme of the movie. That's why I like it.

SIGNS ROCKS!

It is one of my all time favorite movies.

You must look past the whole alien invasion and see what is beyond that, the belief in faith.

BTW, I'm getting Signs and Unbreakable for $25 flat at BestBuy this weekend.

The deal is that you get Signs and either Unbreakable or The Sixth Sense for $25 flat, deal ends Sunday.

Just because there's a cheesy plotline about a minister and his faith doesn't mean it's ok for the rest of the movie to be crap filler.

Yes, just ignore all that alien stuff?

Couldn't have said it any better. And with both movies for $25 to add to the collection is a no-brainer.

$14.77 at Wal-mart. Just picked my copy up this morning after work.

I thought it was a great movie, personally.

I just watched some god-awful movie with my wife the other night... "Gossip" or something like that... I was always 2 steps ahead of my wife on what was going to happen... The only reason I had to watch the movie was to see if I was right about the ending.... *yawn*, yup.

"The Usual Suspects" was another great movie with a surprise ending...
But, a lot of movies with surprise endings aren't as good the 2nd or 3rd time you watch them...
