so...i was walking into my house, i stepped up onto the deck and my sandle got caught under the lip of the wood, foot slid back, and big tow got owned.

pic: prolly not good for work, its kind of gross, i guess:

anywho...i was wondering two things:

1) should i contact my landlord and ask them to round the edges of the portch?

2) should i do anything else about this (IE doctor)? I called my mom (nurse) and sent her the pic. She said to wash it off with something (i used hydrogenporoxide), put neosporin on it (did that), and wrap it up in gauze (did that as well)...anything else i should do? i had a tetnus shot may '05. The flap of skin looked pretty much dead within 10mins of the cut, so i'm guessing it will fall off. I'm afraid to take my bandages off right now b/c i dont wana rip it off >_<

Looks like you got pwned.

Seriously, though - hydrogen peroxide will do the job, but it's not the BEST thing to use. It kills all the germs, yes, but it also kills a lot of the cells that are trying to heal the wound.

Just keep the wound unexposed for a while and you should be fine.

its hard to say if that would need stitching without lifting the flap to see how deep it goes. Tetanus in 05 should be good. Certainly got to keep it sterile and bandaged with topical antibiotics, whether stitched or not. You only have 8 hours to stitch it so don't wait to long to decide. Of course it will eventually close anyway but if its very open and it isn't closed in time it could take a while.

Remember all bleeding eventually stops;)

it doesnt go TOO deep...its a nice little chunk of skin...but by looking at the thickness of the flap, it appears to have gone down a couple MM ( maybe like... .25" or less)

if i dont stitch it, will it grow back to the toe? show i leave it open when i'm not doing anything then bandage it when i go somewhere?

Depending on the thickness of the flap (too thin and it looses its blood supply) it may seal down and heal by secondary intention (from deep to superficial). This may leave a bigger scar. If the peice is devitalized it will become thin and transparent like an onion peal and fall off, but this would mean a thin peice and should be replaced easily. Barring infection the worse case scenario is it will take longer to close and leave a scar.

And the old addage of letting it get some air is total bull shyt. A wound heals best when the scab is prevented from drying out with an antibiotic salve and a bandage. Triple antibiotic or neosporin is fine anywhere but the face, where most plastic surgeons will recommend plain bacitracin due to the tendency for the sulfites in the others to cause very slight allergic reactions which could widen the scar.

If you are comfortable that it doesn't need stitched then clean it, bandage it with antibiotic cream and keep it clean. If your not sure, your doctor can only tell by looking at it and you have 8 hour to decide.

The real fun is when you rip off a toenail. If you do and its still attached, we can put it back if not have a doc see it so the cuticle doesn't seal.
