I guess industrial lawnmowers don't have those switches that turn it off if it's in drive and you leave the seat.

They do. They were invented for industrial mowers for EH&S reasons and trickled down to retail models. I wonder if this was a super old model or the operator had modified it.
 
That's pretty cruel. Even if he was fairly dim witted and "an accident waiting to happen", I feel bad for his family and just want to say Rest In Peace.

It should have been:

Nowhere in the article did it read that the man died from the blades. He was probably crushed by the mower itself.
