We've had threads to talk about those things that we think are particularly well done and well run - how about those things that don't live up to the hype? Just a couple to get you started:
Overrated things:
Hotels: Most FourSeasons and RitzCarltons, almost all European hotels - in particular older "grand" hotels.
Restaurants: Le Bernardin (the food is good, but the room looks like the lobby of a JWMarriott), The Four Seasons, Zuni Cafe in SF (shoot me, but I've never had a good meal there), Sparks Steak House (ALWAYS over cook Medium Rare), Masa ($400/person to be abused).
Apparel: Bally Shoes (poorly made for the price)
Cars: Maserati (have looked bad for years)
Movies: Titanac - ( ARRRGGGHHH!!!!! ), Forest Gump (How did this puff piece beat Shawshank and Pulp Fiction?), GoodFellas (I get it, real mobsters are really violent)
Actors: Nicolas Cage (I just watched ConAir on cable - his southern accent is the funniest thing since Kevin Costner switching accents in Robin Hood)
Books and Authors: The DiVinci Code - Every chapter ends like a batman episode!, Caleb Carr (The Alchemist was one of the worst books I've ever read), JD Salinger (yeah, you read me right - wayyy over praised)
I'll think of some more.
