it's a cultural thing... the parents pay for the child's necessities in return for being a good son/daughter and doing good in school. after they're done with school and are out on their own, that's about it...

Haha... gas and cell phones are definitely not necessities. I hope you at least use that cell phone to call your mom and talk to her every weekend, moms like that sort of thing.
It's not like it's a one-way street. When our parents are old and unable to care for themselves it'll be beneficial for them to have children with the financial means to help out. And most sucessful people with a sense of decency treat their parents very well.
