Overheating, what happens?

That pretty much sums it up. If I am overclocking and it gets to hot, for whatever reason, what really happens? I am guessing worst case is it burns up my chip... but what generally happens? I have read sometimes it seems the computers lock up or shutdown, is this normal or just, you got lucky type thing? Just curious :)

Like you guessed, an overclocked system that is overheating tends to either shutdown, lock up, or slow down first.

It is possible to burn a cpu up but it usually takes extra voltage as newer chips are designed to handle quite a bit of heat.

Yup, basically just locks up/ freezes, shuts down if the temp of the cpu gets to its limit.
