Overheating, what happens?

That pretty much sums it up. If I am overclocking and it gets to hot, for whatever reason, what really happens? I am guessing worst case is it burns up my chip... but what generally happens? I have read sometimes it seems the computers lock up or shutdown, is this normal or just, you got lucky type thing? Just curious

Like you guessed, an overclocked system that is overheating tends to either shutdown, lock up, or slow down first.

It is possible to burn a cpu up but it usually takes extra voltage as newer chips are designed to handle quite a bit of heat.

Yup, basically just locks up/ freezes, shuts down if the temp of the cpu gets to its limit.
