Overheating problem with my laptop

Hey all, all of a sudden my HP zv5000 laptop has been randomly switching to battery power and then eventually it shuts off. I assume it's an overheating problem...I bought a Targus Notebook Chill Mat (Model # PA248U) and it hasn't solved the problem. What should I do?

I have an old Compaq Presario that does the same thing. I think this has more to do with the portion of the laptop hardware that controls the battery charge. Have you tried running the computer without the battery to see if the same problem occurs? (I know it seems simple, but thought I would ask)

When it switches to battery, how long does the laptop stay on till it shuts off? My guess is that there's something loose in the power adapter, which in my experience can be fairly common. It doesn't seem like a overheating problem to me. If it was overheating, it should be shutting off regardless if it is plugged in or on battery.

I have a compaq evo that does the same thing but if I take the battery out and use the AC only it works fine.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I will try running it without the battery and see what happens.

Leaving a laptop on 24/7 causes significant problems with a lot of models. We (the student techteam) always recommend turning off your laptop at night.
