Overheating CPU?

i flashed the BIOS of my old Slot 1motherboard so that I could place an 800mhz CPU in it. The CPU has a passive heatsink on it, and I don't have a fan inthe back of the case yet. Whenever that CPU is in there, the system recognizes it correctly, but the system locks up.

When I place the older P2 400mhz CPU inthere, no lockups. My question is whether the CPU could be overheating, or maybe it isn't fully supported by the motherboard, even though it's recognized. The temps inthe bios are low.
 
Could be the wrong voltage from the board for the cpu. Some slocket adapters have voltage jumpers on them. I would look for a different used board at places like justdeals or ebay. Before ordering, check the manufacturer's website for specs in the archives, or any search engine for old reviews.
 
? my 500mhz p3 (cartridge) has a fan on it and it still gets bloody hot, no way i could run it passive...

I have 2 P3 866MHz Slot 1 (Cartridge) CPU's running with passive heatsinks for days on end without any troubles. It's a Compaq Professional Workstation AP550 and has 1 exhaust fan and that's it.

It is most likely a CPU Voltage issue as has been said. Out of interest, what motherboard chipset are you attempting to use it in?
 
I think it could be a heat issue. I had problems when I went from dual p2 350s to dual p3 600s. The 600s came with passive heatsinks, one would run fine, but 2 would run way too hot. I added some dual fan heatsinks and it's been running strong for 2 years.

me? it's on an ASUS P3W mobo, no idea what the chipset is 😱 No exhauset fan tho...

it idles in the low 50'Cs (and the hsf is hot, so it's not as if it isn't making contact with the hsf)...no stability problems but i doubt it would run stable passive...
 
Most likely a compatibility issue with CPU/MB. A slot 1 CPU with heatsink should run warm, even without a fan.

I'd forget about the upgrade. Going from a 400MHz to 800MHz CPU is not going to improve internet browsing or basic Office duties. Bump the RAM up to 386MB with those rigs.
