thanks for the support kobra, and im only blameing ati for there 5hitty heatsink, i dont want to spend another 260 for another, or spend money on fixing it.

and cawchy, i did do something wrong, i confused the nvidia heatsink and the ati heatsink, WITH NO INSTRUCTIONS

so its their fault for not including instructions when they state that changing your heatsink will void your warrentee? How did you know it was a bad ati heatsink if you didn't get artifacts with it?

imagine being in my place, would you want to spend all that money? replacing THEIR heatsink that messed up? after you confused zalmans heatsinks WITH NO INSTRUCTIONS

Bro don't apologize, you got a bum card, thats known to overheat, ATI's fault for shipping crap like that - I lost well over $200 on ATI between shipping costs sending back bad cards, and the final hit I took when I ebayed it to be done with it last night. I should start a class action lawsuit against those dicks for all of their overheating faulty crap they've been pushing for the last year. This latest Doom-3 stuff with their hot running cards would probably get me some names to add to the suit. Take one look at that piece of 5hit flimsey ass $1 aluminum fan/sink on stock ATI cards, and a new meaning for the word PATHETIC comes your way.. Sorry, but they know it sucks, and they should recall it, and replace them all for free for people.. Cheap bastards.

Anyway, just throw the factory sink back on, sans the missing screw, and box it up and take it back up to Microcenter and tell them you got a defective card, and ask for a refund - or better yet, tell them you want to exchange it for a 6800GT or something. They might give you some hassle, but usually not, Microcenter has a 30-Day Policy- including open boxes. If they hassle, be pushy, demand satisfaction, and go from there.. I returned a 6800 and 6800GT to Microcenter 2 days ago, they went through some BS to make me worried, took the cards in back, and had their little techie go over them, wasted 20 minutes of my time, then came out and said they will "Exchange" them only.. My reply was "Uh no, cash please or lets get corporate on the phone".. Well, they gave me cash.

All the righteous people here, trying to give this guy a guilt trip are rediculous..

His card didn't overheat. From the sounds of things the core was damaged while putting another heatsink on, or he bumped another part of the vid card.

Ok, WTF, I misread what you said.. How the hell did your ATI get a friggen NVIDIA heatsink on it???? If thats the case, then indeed, you broke the card man... Even though 9800's are hot, and overheat, you flat out broke the card, so its your fault sorry to say.. But you have the options I presented.. Best of luck to you.

Looking on the Microcenter recipt I have here... Their policy is:

"Merchandise may be returned for refund with your original sales reciept. Microcenter reserves the right to charge a 15% restocking fee if your merchandise isn't in reasonable "Like New" condition or is missing packaging. "Like New" means the product in its original carton with all packaging materials, manuals and software."

i dont have the money to upgrade, so im just getting it replaced, tight budget, i was stretching it to 260 after taxes and shipping

and kobra, there were no instructions for which is which, i thought one was a backup, so i just accepted it because it said radeons were supported, after i noticed the difference

no, it was damaged from the heat building up after using the nvidia heatsink (NO INSTRUCTIONS)

Could you explain the process of heat "building up?" Also, putting on another heatsink voids your warrentee automaticly. Blaiming them for not giving you a manual on how to void your warrentee doesn't make sence to me. If overheating was the problem it was because you didn't mount the heatsink properly. And don't blaim instructions. If you didn't know how to do it why did you try replacing the heatsink?

Dude, you didn't fry the card..

Just order one of these: http://www.arctic-cooling.com/en/products/vga_silencer/

I pulled my sink off one of my ATI's for a minute or two before it locked, and found out it was running for 2 months with a faulty sink and was running way hot, and I still didn't ruin mine... I put a VGA Cooler on it, and it was working perfectly. Do that, you should be ok.. If not, just RMA it and hope for the best.

Don't worry about anyone calling Microcenter, they are just pulling your leg. Microcenter probably sells 1000 video cards a week, they are too busy to worry about 1 fanatic off a forum reporting something they don't care about anyway.. Microcenter is based in my area, they have local stores all around, all they do is send the card back to ATI.. Not like they care... I've returned a ton of dodgy stuff.. LOL
