"overclocking"

Hi i have a k7 athlon (slot 1) 650mhz. It is a 100mhz bus and a 6.5 multiplier(?). When i start up it says my proc speed = 650 mhz (6.5x100). I know my motherboard jumpers have a 100 setting and a 133 setting. I would guess it is set to 100. If i simply set it to 133 wont i then have a 864.5 MHZ proc? Do i need to add more volts or soemthing? My moboo has PC health monitering..what is too hot? THANKS!!

I don't think you can do that. Slot 1 athlons are not overclocking friendly. You have to use goldenfinger (I have no idea what this is) go toathlonoc to find out.

I thought classic Athlons use Slot A mobos and not Slot 1. Pentiums use Sloy 1 don't they? If not tell me about it!

Albert.

A2KLAU, Slot 1 and Slot A are physically the same. The difference is in the way they're wired to the motherboard. But you are right, ZZZZ meant to say slot A.

T-man, are there any settings in between 100 and 133? I don't think it'll boot at 133, but you could try 105 or so. The goldfinger device (GFD) is necessary to get any useful oc out of it. You have to pry the plastic case off the Athlon, and install this onto the chip. (no big thing- it just plugs in) Good luck!

You can also try here for a GFD. I got one for my Athlon Classic 700. Runs great at 900 😀

You most likely won't be able to boot at 133mhz bus speed. With my bus speed testing on my 700 I could only get to 105-6 before it wouldn't boot.

You have the right idea, though. 😉

Electric is right, you're not gonna get much higher than 110..and that would be very lucky. Do as GaryTCS says..get a GFD. If you goto this site:Athlon Overclocking Basics this will help you understand the basics of overclocking the K7 Athlon. They also have GFD's for sale there as well. Oooh and one more thing..if your gonna overclock that athlon, your gonna need some good cooling...your stock heatsink and fan probably won't do. I would suggest getting an Alpha P7125 or something comparable.

Hope this helps...just my .02 worth
