Overclocking your Mouse???????????

I read an article from the Gannett News Service in our local paper titled "Speed at any price? Overclocking yields benefits, risks for PC users" by Daniel Greenberg. The article contained the usual misinformation and errors. One part of the article did catch my eye- when the author was talking about a PC user who was overclocking. "He also overclocked Voodoo 3 video cards for better 3D graphics, and was considering overclocking his mouse for extra precision in multiplayer games."

Although I am not the most elite overclocker dude, I have read this and other computer enthusiast boards for some time, and have never seen anything on overclocking a mouse. I am hoping that the Overclocker in the article was feeding the author a line BS. That would be hilarious. But I have to ask was he pulling the authors chain or is there something to this? 😕

Only way I can maybe see that happening is if you have an old bus mouse that attaches to one of those multi-function cards that went into PCI or ISA slots... and then you OC the FSB...

You can "overclock" your mouse (meaning increasing the sampling rate) by using the PS/2 rate program (this is for PS/2 mice only). Doing this will increase the smoothness of your mouse movements, but if you overclock it to high, you can damage your mouse.

You know I almost went for that mouse OC but then I looked at my joystick and realized I barely use my mouse in games. I just saw it as a posibility of more problems to track down if something pops up. Already have CPU/FSB and my VidCard OCed I think messing with the mouse would just be asking for trouble. Granted if enough people reply to this with good results I might.......unless I have to add a fan to the side of it.😉

It won't "fry" your mouse or anything. Me, I couldn't really tell the difference, but I'm not much into first person shooters.

I downloaded PS2Rate Plus from Tweakfiles and was able to increase my mouse sampling rate from 40hz to 100hz. I have noticed a difference in mouse movement(smoother movement in my desktop) and in mp games like c-strike (smoother turning). Just my 0.02.

Well @#$%&!! I was hoping the overclocker was feeding the author a line. Thanks guys, I new I'd get the answer here..

Lol.. programs like PS2 Rate had been around for a really long time man! Anyone who play Quake should know about this program

USB most doesn't have that problem, mainly because the default refresh rate for them is at 100hz, whereas PS2 default is 40hz.

Remember that increasing the sample rate takes cpu power as well.
That is not a problem with USB.
I think the sampling rate for USB is 70-80.
Disable USB error detection in the system devices and that will be better too.

Anynone get PS/2 Rate to work on a MSI K7T pro2-a board? My mouse goes crazy if I do it, even with "Don't Detect" checked. I guess I'm gonna have to buy a USB mouse if it can't.

Hey, that's not a bad thing, USB mice are great. Personnally, my favourite is the Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer. It has to be simply the best mouse I've ever used! 🙂

I have a Logitech Wingman Gaming Mouse. I am playing a lot of quake2 (for some years now) and I just have to say that PS2 @ 200 hz beats the usb thingy. With my mouse I got an adapter so I can use it in both PS2 and USB. USB is ok, but PS2 just makes it a bit smoother and your rail effciency improves ;-)

I don't think most "normal" people would notice the difference between PS2 @ 200 and USB. If you are just running windows and no FPS shooters just stick with the USB solution.
