Overclocking with 4 sticks of DDR2 512mb ram

Anyone tried overclocking with 4 sticks of DDR2 512mb ram on any motherboard?

Do you lose OC potential when using 4 sticks? I currently have 2 sticks of OCZ Gold EL (non-XTC) PC2-6400 ram in my comp at the settings in my sig, and I actually haven't tried for more. I just wanted to know whether I could use 4 sticks of the same ram and get the same overclock?

Thanks for any help.

I've done it on several and I am testing it on 2 MOBOs now, DFI AM2 board and DFI 975 board. Most likely using 4 DIMMs as opposed to 2 DIMMs will cut your OC potential somewhat. However, the only real way to tell is to install and test. It varies from chipset to chipset, from platform to platform, on your unique hardware setup, and your OCing methods.

My best example is my personal gamer using Opty 165 with ASUS A8N32 SLI and Corsair PC4400C2.5. With 2 DIMMs I could run 280+ on FSB. With 4 DIMMs, I was limited to about 250 or so. It's been a while but those are the approximate numbers I got.

No, but im in the same boat as you im looking to get more ram and i wanna know if i should just buy 2x512mb of the same stuff i have or get it in 2x1GB sticks. Im not to sure but i do belive it will hinder your oc but to what extent i am unsure myself, I think it has somethign to do with the 1T or 2T cmd rate. This is just a guess but feel free to correct me if im wrong)

I know that was true for some of the socket 939 Athlon 64s (I used to have a 939 3000+)...I just wanna know if anyone with a Core2 has tried it.

I'm setting up a test rig now with the DFI 975 X/G Infinity MOBO to test 2gb OCing vs 4gb OCing. I'll probably do an ASUS 975 board soon also. I'll post when I have results. Also, Yoxxy has done some 4 DIMM OCing recently. He said he lost about 20mhz - 30mhz on average with 4 DIMMs.

Is that on memory speed or processor speed?

That would have to be FSB speed. He would never even have mentioned it, if he had only lost 20-30 Mhz of cpu speed, on a 1.2-1.5 Ghz overclock.

That is the meaning I took from his statement in the IM, FSB speed.

Thanks for the info. And it'll be good to see your results also, when you finish.

I'm just wondering if I should upgrade because I get a lot of initial stuttering in Gothic 3...the only game that does this. I can hear the HDD being accessed a lot.

That was the exact symptom I had with BF2 when using 1gb. Moved to 2gb, stuttering went away.
