overclocking ValueRAM PC2700 to PC3200

Hey everybody. I recently jumped on the OM deal for the Kingston ValueRAM 512mb PC2700 for $60. I had read somewhere that this is the same ram they use in their PC3200 sticks but I wanted more opinions. Anyone know if these things will run at DDR400 if I loosen the timings (3-3-3-11) and up the voltage? The reason I ask is cause I have Crucial PC3200 ram running in my system right now and I want them both to run in sync.

There's one way to find out for certain. Give it a shot. A few things, though.

1. The odds of getting VALUEram to overclock by 34MHz are against you. (I hope you make it though!)
2. Even if you do get it to run at 200MHz, it'll never run at the same timings as the Corsair PC3200 does
3. If you have a dual-channel motherboard, this is not a good idea. (ignore if you're not using an NForce or P865/P875 board)

Heh it's not corsair, it's crucial ram. the timings are like 3-3-3-11, which is pretty high (this isn't an overclocker's ram). and yeah I have an nforce 2 so hopefully dual channel will work fine. I will try it out. the only thing is I don't get this ram till the 16th, which is a long way off and I'm curious now 🙂. What would happen if I O/Ced the kingston chip to PC3200 with the same timings as my crucial and tried to run it in dual channel?

The best way, is to simply try it out. Run Memtest86 (or Memtest86+, it's a modified, updated version, released by a different group, that claims that it fixes issues with the original). You can download ISO images of both, and burn to a CD, and just boot the system with the CD in the drive. That way you don't risk corrupting your installed OS + data due to flaky RAM settings.

I have a strong feeling that the Kingston RAM should probably work at PC3200 speeds, with slower timings and slightly-increased voltage. They generally use the same chips on both DIMMs, and I've heard reports from prior KVR deal threads that they OC'ed pretty well. SpekTek, on the other hand, tends to OC very poorly, and can sometimes fail to meet even non-OC'ed specs. The bigger issue, might be running in dual-channel operation with a different brand of memory DIMM or different chips, however both are first-tier memory-makers, so should be good quality, which means that it has a very good chance of working. Again, the only way to know for sure is to test it out yourself.
