Overclocking the 2500 Barton question.

If I set the FSB to 200 in the mb bios for this cpu should I use expensive memory like CORSAIR, pc 2700 and oc the memory too, or buy pc3200 so I don't have to oc the memory? Or, can this be done with memory like pny or kingston? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks...

The speed at which PC2700 will overclock depends greatly on the manufacturer and quality of the RAM. Some of the higher quality RAM like Crucial, Muskin, etc. will run at PC3200 speeds, but you'll probably have to use conservative RAM timings and bump the voltage up higher than the default 2.5v.

If you've already got some PC2700, you might try and see how far you go with it. However, if you are buying the RAM new or plan on going higher than 200 FSB, go with the PC3200.

My Muskin Basic PC2700 is currently running at 183 FSB on 2.7v. I am sure it can go further, as my 8RDA board is what's holding me back.

Corsair has their "cheap" value memory and Kingston has their "expensive" low latency memory.

I'm assuming you're overclocking via FSB and multiplier locked.

Do you feel lucky? If you want up to 2.2GHz, then PC3200 is fine. If you want more, then you may need faster memory. But for the most part, PC3200 will be fine.

Thanks for the help...🙂

Yes, my Barton 2500 is multiplier locked so the most I can/want to do is up the fsb setting to 200. I figured that if I bought some good memory, say corsair, etc. PC3200 I wouldn't have to oc the memory since the default fsb would be 400 anyway. So if cheaper pc3200 memory(pny, kingston, etc.) has a fsb default of 400, I shouldn't have a problem if I up the fsb on the mb to 200, making the amd barton 2500 run like a barton 3200. Do I understand that correctly? This is my first time at mild ocing and I want to make sure I buy the right stuff....🙂

Correct. You're not overclocking your memory if you're shooint for a 200MHz FSB.

So I suppose the question I have to decide, is whether to buy pc2700 and overclock it or just buy pc3200 and leave it alone.

I'd buy PC3200. Depending on the brand and size and where you get it from, it may be cheaper than PC2700!

But the price difference should be minimal.
