Overclocking Question

I posted this in the 7900gt unlock the beast thread and haven't really heard a response. I have an evga 7900GT (vanilla, no co or superclock), did the 1.4v mod, and put a VF700 and mem heatsinks on. As a result, I went to town and started overclocking. I can get my core up to 650 or so, which seems ok, and I have had the memory up to 850-900 as well (all through rivatuner btw), and it is perfectly fine when I run 3dmark. However, when I go into a game, such as FEAR or Battlefield 2, the computer bogs big time, and the video is all jerky. If I put the clock settings down to about 630/800, it seems everything is fine. What causes this? Temps seem to be in line (not above 65 degrees), and again, it runs flawlessly in 3dmark.
Any advice or help would be great.
Thanks!
Mike

Some games are just more taxing on the gpu than 3DMark. When I play FEAR I have to raise my voltages a bit for it to remain artifact free where as it can run 3DMark05 just fine at the lower voltages.

Hmmm, that is probably what is happening because there is no problem in The Godfather. It just also seems weird that others can get the core and memory so much higher than me at the same voltage...
