I saw a post today that incdicated the ability to overclock the quad xeons!

Now at one point in time, you could never get a motherboard to mess with such a chip.

Is this real? What motherboards can do it? Can you get a dual socket mb and overclock 8 cores!?

Yes, it sounds good. At one time you just couldn't. These motherboards were made for workstations/servers and they were not meant to be changed.

when Mac OS X came out, it looked cool, i could
not figure out how to do simple things. what happened
to not needing an instruction manual ?

Tyan 5000V chipset for $249 !

looks like Asus has about 14 different 5000 chipset products at the Egg

not sure if the 5000 chipset, which seems to be one of the main
ones for the dual-771, 8-core-system, is OC friendly.

then again, you guys are AT-ers, you will find a way.

The 775- quad xeons 3220 can be used on a normal desktop 775 board and be overclocked easily.

As can the LGA 775 Q6600, and the QX6700. You just have to make sure that the motherboard you buy is quad-core compatible, because not all LGA 775 boards are, even some of the ones that run (& overclock) C2D's.

i have 3 quadcores.

2 are xeons, 1 is a Q

X3220, X3210, Q6600.

If your talkinga bout those xeons, then yes you can overclock them, however i highly recomend the gigabyte P35 or the Asus P35 boards. They handle quads very very nicely.

Now if your talking about overclocking a cloverdale, you need to pin mod it. I suggest you go on Xtremesystems.org/forums And pm a pal of mine named dave. His nick over there is Movieman.

If you have a cloverdale overclocking question, he's probably the best person in my book to consult.

Thanks for the help Aigomorla!

I know I am at least getting a quad conroe after the price cut. I am going to check on the Xeonx. 8 cores sounds kick-ass for rendering.
