overclocking p4 3.06 533 FSB

hey guys, i just came into possession of a 3.06b chip with 2 gigs of dual mushkin pc2700 ram on a soyo v1.0 mobo. i was wondering if anyone had any experience overclocking this chip to higher speeds? if so, how has the stability and max performance been for you?

i'm asking because on the forums i could probably sell or trade the 3.06b for a 3.0c and the 2 gigs of pc2700 for 2 gigs of pc3200 quote easily with only having to put a little of my money in. i'm wondering if i should stay with my current setup (and maybe overclock it) or since the prices right now are approximately equal, try to sell/trade to get an 800 FSB setup.

I have a 3.06 that runs at 3.5 at 1.6v.

Cant play with the multi on a P4 unless you have an ES.

You'd only get 200fsb out of a P4B on a 2.53 or lower CPU. A 3.06 P4 at 200fsb would be running at a rediculously high 4.6ghz.

touche, but actually does anyone know how much of a difference the 533 fsb is to an 800 fsb? even after i overclock it? basically i'm deciding whether to keep the 3.06 or trade it in for a 3.0c.... any suggestions?

if it can hit 166fsb you should keep it

seriously tho, its 166fsb or bust when it comes to B chip OCing ~ otherwise a C chip will seriously outperform it.

Well he isn't going to hit that either.....

3.06ghz = 133fsb x 23..... 23 x 166fsb = 3818mhz....I say no chance....

I say you have hyper threading and if you can get it up to 3.5ghz as long as you are running a dual channel mobo you are not too shabby....

3.06@3.5ghz = 152fsb or 608fsb total.....

3.0c@3.5ghz = 233fsb or 933fsb total....

So the latter will have more bandwidth but I venture about 5-10% better in most apps....

hey just a question, how do you guys do the whole FSB and multiplier thing?

meaning that it's running at 3.06 which is the multiplier 23 times 133 fsb? so what is the 533 fsb then? and how is the total 608? etc?

basically if you guys could just give me a quick rundown of calculations of speed and exactly what the numbers mean i would totally appreciate it. and it seems like the consensus is to get an 800 fsb chip. i'm thinking of a 3.0c and overclocking to 3.2 or more, which shouldn't be too bad. sound about right?

The multiplier as it is called is 23 on your chip and is factory locked and not able to be reversed....

Couple of other chips....

3.06(533) = 23 x 133
2.8(533) = 21 x 133
2.53(533) = 19 x 133

3.2c(800) = 16 x 200
3.0c(800) = 15 x 200
2.8c(800) = 14 x 200
2.6c(800) = 13 x 200
2.4c(800) = 12 x 200

2.4a(400) = 24 x 100
2.0a(400) = 20 x 100
1.6a(400) = 16 x 100


NOw the fsb is 133 with your chip but to determine system bus the intel p4 is quad-pumped...so 4 x fsb = system fsb....133 x 4 = 533mhz....200 x 4 = 800mhz....


The above 608 I listed is 608 / 4 = 152fsb x 23 = 3.5ghz (3496mhz exactly)

hey duvie, you said there's no chance of me hitting 3.8 ghz with my 3.06b chip, what if i air compression cool it to like -29C? or at that poitn should i just get a "C" chip so i won't a) damage my chip and b) make it easier on myself?

Do you have 500-1000 to spend on a vapor cooling setup like that???

If you did I would buy a 3.0c or 3.2c and have a much better chance of pushing a chip to 3.8ghz on air cooling or cheaper water cooling....

hmm, good point. anyone know of any good water cooling solutions? also, what's the lowest temp i can get with water?
