Overclocking P4 2.4Ghz 800 FSB

One of my friends a few dorms down is selling a P4 2.4 Ghz with an 800 Mhz FSB, and I was thinking about buying it. I could get it for cheap, so I was wondering how well the newer P4s overclock. He just bought it like a week or two again, but got frustrated building his computer, so just bought a Dell, and he's selling his old parts....

Anywa, I haven't been keeping up with the newer chips, so I wasn't sure if they're generally good overclockers or not. If they do overclock well, would it offer a descent performance boost over an Athlon XP Barton at 2.1Ghz? My barton is aging, and I notice it doesn't do so well when I have a bunch of applications open.

Any input would be much appreciated.

Thanks

This CPU will blow the barton out of the water. Depending on the stepping, you should be able to reach 3.0ghz and above depending on your cooling, board, memory and bios settings.

Really? That's good to hear. I've got some OCZ PC3200 RAM that runs pretty well, so I don't think the RAM would be too big of a problem. I'm not sure what board he bought though..... He said he bought a $130 board, so I'd imagine it's decent. And I'd probably be using stock cooling, unless there's a way to use my Aero 7+ on a Pentium.

Thanks for the reply, I think I'm gonna try and buy this from him.

Stock cooling will work fine, with fresh thermal paste. I use a single edge razor blade to apply it, just enough to cover the heat spreader. Use the memory ratios, or a lower setting, such as 333, to overclock.

My system:

Intel P4 2.4C 800FSB @ 3.2GHz w/ Vantec Aeroflow 1.5v
MSI 865PE Neo2 LS
2 x 256MB DDR400 Mushkin Enhanced in dual mode (matched)

Not to a mobile Barton. You will be able to get 2500Mhz with mobile barton, and will blow out of the water to the 2.4 at 3.0GHz. You had should specify what kind of bertons it beats.

LOL to the guy who bought the dell, yea if you get a good board ASUS or ABIT (Others could work but I dont know em) and get the processor, you should have a VERY GOOD system! To get a FSB of 283 (1133) and the ram be in sync, your goanna need PC 4400. But you can always O'C you system later so yea get the 2.4GHZ Processor because it's a good overclocker, ppl here get O'Cs of 3.4GHZ Relatively easily. Just keep in mind that when overclocking you do it in increments, if you do buy it be sure to ask for more info about O'Cing before doing so unless you already know.
GET IT WHILE YOU CAN!

barton at 2.1 I would call equal to a ~2.9ghz p4. You can probably get at least 3.2-3.3ghz out of this chip if it's a weak one. 3.6-3.8 if it's a good one. You decide if the gamble is worth it to you.
