Overclocking nVidia GPUs

I picked up an evga 7800gtx and i'd like to bump it a little bit and play around,
however under display settings there are no overclocking tools as I heard there was.
all i get is a gpu temperature monitor.

so, how do you overclock?

I used to use "Coolbits" for overclocking my nviida cards, you can enable it with a registry key. Google it for details, I'm sure its still sitting there in the drivers.

The default nvidia drivers will allow you to manually set the core and memory clocks, just go to display settings, advanced, nvidia properties.

No they wont. Nvidia keeps it hidden.

YOu can do one of 2 things. You can:

A. Use the XG drivers (I recommend this one)

B. Modify your registry manually (Which we can guide you through)

Coolbits... it's a 1K file that unlocks the overclocking option. No extra stupid crap... just what you need, the ability to adjust clock speed.

You can use coolbits to overclock.
When you overclock, you want to make sure that it is stable. So, you need to check temperatures preferably during the benchmark, not after. You will then need another utility for that!

You might as well start with RivaTuner, which lets you overlock as well as monitor the GPU during-benchmarking temperature after.

I recommend the XTreme-G drivers. Not only do they unlock the overclocking, but they improve speed and IQ for just about everything. Use those, and all of your questions will go away 😉 .

What are XG drivers? 3rd party graphic card drivers?

I'm kinda of skeptical about that...

XG (XTreme-G) drivers are reference NVIDIA drivers (sometimes official, other times beta, and the beta's are 99% of the time faster than the release versions) that have been modded with tweaks for better image quality and more speed. They also have all of the NVIDIA control panel applets unlocked, which gives you more options to play with. I have been using the XG drivers since I got my 6800GT and have had ZERO, repeat ZERO problems with them. They are fast, with great image quality (better than reference NVIDIA drivers).

All of the tweaks in the XG drivers can be done manually within RivaTuner, but they are already done for you so you don't have to do them yourselves (which can get complicated). TRUST ME. You will have no problems with XG drivers. Try them out.
