Overclocking my P4

Well, you have my rig below. I'd like to overclock my CPU to around 3ghz if possible (which it might not be). The problem is...well...the Vaio. The BIOS wont let me alter anything that has to do with the CPU (save hyper threading) and all software does not support my mobo...I do have the latest BIOS from the sony site, and nothing changed.

So, any way that I could overclock it somehow? If not, this thread can die.

you cannot o/c retail comps ie. hp, dell, sony etc. they have a custom bios designed by em.
if you are going to o/c you would need a new mobo, probably a new psu and some better ram.
it is not worth it o/cing your comp

you wont see a siginificant difference between 2.8 and 3.0 ghz so dont bother finding a way to OC your VAIO. 🙂

i overclocked my work machine from 2.8->3.3 with clockgen.. It is stable.. Completely stable. But 50MHz or more i think i would need a voltage increase but with my Intel Mobo i don't have a clue if that is even possible.

Clockgen or CPU/FSB proggy's are the only thing that'll work for major retail mobos. The only other way is to get a "normal" bios for that specific mobo and hope that sony didn't mess with the design or something.

Yes, don't bother.

That small of an overclock will make very little differance. You would get a better improvement but getting better ram, PC2700 ram with an 800mhz FSB P4 is starving your CPU. You can get a gig of PC3200 for like $80 right now, so if you want some iprovement that would be the way to go in your case.
