Overclocking K6 -3+ 450

In trying to get a little more life out of my system I invested $50 in this new chip.

Just booted on my Matsonic 6260S with 64Meg PC100. It has an old bios (Matsonic doesn't post a newer one, do I need a newer one, if so where do I find it?). Recognized the chip as k6-3+, but only to 550mhz. However, SiSift and WinTune recognize it up to 600Mhz.

Running at 600 (6x100) and 2.0v, it crashed a couple of times on "spool 32" when trying to print. Maybe the board can't handle 600Mhz ????

I've slowed it to 550Mhz (5.5x100) and it is very stable. Should I try 2.1v and 600Mh again?

ps I just order 128M PC133. Settings on this board only go to 100mhz. I supppose that is as high as it will go?

ps According to SiSoft I went from 825MIPS, 471 MFLOPS with my K6-2 350 (@400) to 1451MIPS, 737MFLOPS with the new chip. Nice boost for $50. ANd, it should be much better with the new RAM I have coming - I think.

Any comments or suggestions.

If you are stable at 550Mhz with the stock 2.0 volts, try it with 2.1. If you're not stable at 2.1, and you have a good cooler, you could try it at 2.2, but I wouldn't go any higher than that. If you're still not stable, then it may be that the chip just can't handle 600Mhz...still, 550Mhz out of a 450Mhz chip isn't anything to be upset about. 🙂

Good deal! I had to put mine up to 2.1v to get it to 600Mhz as well, but I'm running happily now (and quite a bit cooler than my K6-2 500 was running, also at 2.1v)...

where did you get that chip btw. I have a matsonic 6260s board laying around with an old v3 3000. Maybe I should get one of those chips and give it a try!

PC Liquidator for 47.99.
I read a post that they are offering free shipping now.
Great chip for the money.

ps: set your board to 2x the chip will map it to 6x

just bought a k63450 from tiger direct. they have a better return policy (i.e., they actually have one..) and they have next day delivery for 11 dollars... 2 day for 7 !!!

anyhoo. can you guys post some benchmarks?

I would like to know how this chip will compare to my P2450...

also, I am going to use a matsonic 6260s mobo. anyone have experience with this board?

thanks
