Overclocking is Good--And Bad

I just changed out my motherboard from a Gigabyte GA-7VAX (KT-400 based) to a A7N8X Deluxe v. 2.0, and I?d like to report some results.

First of all, I have 2x256MB Geil PC-3200 Ultra GL2563200U in slots 1 and 3. The CPU is a Tbred 2600+. Video is a Ti 4600 from PNY running at stock speeds.

I reinstalled XP Pro SP2 when changing motherboards. I find that I can run well at 10.5x200, which is quite close to the native frequency of the 2600+, but I cannot change the multiplier at all above that. The Asus POST reporter tells me there?s an overclock error and will not proceed. Don?t get me wrong, I?m happy to be running a 166 CPU at 200, but I wish I could increase the multiplier. By the way, this occurs no matter how relaxed or aggressive my memory timings are set. (And in another by the way, the Geil memory gets some pretty aggressive, stable timings.)

Actually, the same thing happens when I run at the native FSB of 12.5x166. If I try to go above 12.5, bloophg. Nothing. By the way, I?m running an SLK-800 with an 8cm fan and 60 CFM across it, averaging 40-45 degrees C, so heat is not the issue.

I have confidence in the memory, because it looks really pretty in my case and it?s hard for me to believe that something so pretty could be evil.

The problem seems to be in the BIOS, which if I recall is 1005. Has anyone else here seen problems with increasing the multiplier on a T-bred past stock?

PS: I have played with all the voltages, but fercrissakes, I?m only trying to go from 10.5 multiplier to 11.

Sorry about the bump, but I meant to put the above message in the Asus forum. Can a mod move it there for me? Sorry about the misfire.

Well, welcome to AT and we don't have an Asus forum. This one is fine but it could also go into CPU/Processors and Overclocking Forum. Take a look at the Navigation box at the top right side of the page. Click on the down arrow and you'll see a listing of Forums.

D'Oh, I meant the Asus A798X *thread*, not *forum*. The thread which is right here in the Motherboard section.

That being the case (and since you haven't gotten any responses here), I would recommend you do the "move" yourself. Mods here generally don't take the time to move threads. Gotta take that responsibility yourself friend. :) There's a big difference between a thread and a forum.
